Cowboys Stadium as a concert venue

Web producer -  Welcome to our chat. Music Critic Mario Tarradell, Staff Writer Joy Tipping and Cowboys Stadium Writer Jeff Mosier will be discussing last night’s U2 concert in Arlington and how Cowboys Stadium is panning out as a concert venue.

Joy Tipping -  Hi Mario, hi Jeff!

[Comment From Cootie lu]
U2 is great in concert and fantastic performers but I just have to say the acoustics at Cowboys stadium make it a poor venue for a quality concert. I work at the stadium and the general consensus seemed to be that way- especially at the higher levels. However, it seemed the folks that drank more didn't seem to notice as much. Just my thoughts.

I went to the George Strait concert and U2 last night. I thought the Strait concert was worse than U2. I thought U2 sounded good for being in that large a venue Cowboys Stadium or any other large football stadium for that matter

Jeff Mosier/Reporter -  In the comments about Mario's review, it seemed like a majority of the people sitting in the lower sections were generally happy with the acoustics and almost everyone in the 400 level said it was terrible.

Joy Tipping -  I've been to George Strait and Paul McCartney and haven't had any acoustic problems; they seem to be largely centered on where you're sitting. For George Strait, I was all over the building, including way up in the 400s, and could hear fine. For McCartney, I was in the 100s toward the back, same thing. It'll be interesting to see what it sounds like in there with a full orchestra for the Star Wars concert next week.

Jeff Mosier/Reporter -  For the record, I was sitting in the 400 level in the end zone, and the sound was pretty good there. But I was sitting directly in front of the speaker array, and the 400 level in the end zone is a little lower than 400 level elsewhere.

Joy Tipping -  All in all, I have to say the stadium sounds much better than I would have expected as a concert venue. It was, after all, built mostly for the acoustics of football fans screaming their heads off, so I think we have to be a little forgiving if the concert acoustics aren't perfectly perfect. Of course, when you pay 100s of dollars for a ticket, I realize that's a little hard to swallow.

AA center would probably be a MUCH better venue acoustics wise for concerts

Mario Tarradell -

It's now pretty clear that Cowboys Stadium has sound issues, especially as you get into the nosebleed seats, which is the 400 sections. It's something that concert goers need to keep in mind when wanting to purchase tickets. The building is not conducive to good sound -- round, metal, glass, cavernous. What it has is size. Think of it this way: What other venue in North Texas could have contained U2's mammoth stage and more than 70,000 people? I can't think of another one. Not today, anyway, with Texas Stadium now a part of history.
