[Comment From Kerri]
I find myself in the unenviable position of relocating back to Massachusetts after several years out of state, at a time when I'll be about 7 months pregnant. I'm an attorney, have been practing for 4 years, and I will be looking for employment outside of the big-firm environment. I wonder if it's worth it for me to begin looking now, wait until I actually get there, or wait until after I have my child? I understand the anti-discrimination laws, but, practically speaking, I'm concerned about the first impression I make when I walk in the door for an interview (if I should be so lucky). Do employers even consider hiring someone who may have to be out for several weeks, or who may not be able to start for several weeks (especially in this economy)? As you can see, I'm having trouble devising my strategy, and your thoughts are appreciated.

Elaine Varelas -  Kerri - First congratulations!   You do have a job search challenge,     and as with most job search actvity, my comment is why wait?
12:00
Elaine Varelas -  You know what you want to do, where you will be practicing, and the size firm you will want to find out more about.
12:01
Elaine Varelas -  It's time to start the networking associated with job search.   You initial strategy is to identify all the firms in the right geography, and the right size that are potential employers for you.
12:02
Elaine Varelas -  If you don't have a LinkedIn profile, put it together no, and start linking.   See who you may know who can talk about your expertise, and your committment to your profession.
12:03
Elaine Varelas -  If you are invited to meet or interview, you will want to present as a professional pregnant woman.   With a potential 12 week leave, you are offering people plenty of planning time, and the economy may even adjust a bit - toward the positive.
12:05
Elaine Varelas -  Why not be in front og hiring managers sooner rather than later.   How can they not take you seriously?   As an aside, I do know a Kerri (true name) who got her offer from a very smart hiring manager when she was 8 months pregnant.   That must be a good sign.:)

Can I ask for a reference from a colleague, or must it be a superior?
