Chat with Globe photographer Jim Wilson

12:35
Jim Wilson -  Hi, folks -- I'm ready to take your questions...who's up first?
12:37
Jim Wilson -  A little about myself: I'm deputy director of photography for the Globe. I'm responsible for the department's technology and administration. I've been with the copany for 26 years, although with technology the way it is, every day is still very exciting.

Funny question- I love the globe and its great photos but I can't keep up reading everyday . I don't want the globe to fail someday. Why don't they ask for donations like Nation magazine?
12:38
Jim Wilson -  Well, Mary, that's a business questino that's really outside the realm of my expertise. But Teresa, a 10-year online veteran, tells me that charging for content online hasn't worked yet. But we'll see.

For Christmas I received a very generous gift - a Canon Rebel. It's the first SLR I've ever owned, and I've yet to learn anything about it. What can I say - I'm a busy, working mom. What would you suggest I learn about it first? What are some of the simpler features that would make the biggest impact on my photos (which, I admit, are mostly of my daughter)? Thank you!
12:40
Jim Wilson -  First of all, Lucy, no need to waste your time trying to read the technical manual. Most modern digital cameras have so many computerized controls built it (automatic settings) that you can simply point and shoot.
12:41
Jim Wilson -  I would suggest using the setting called "Program", which does all the thinking for you.

Hi Jim - thanks for taking the time. The eternal question - Canon or Nikon - which do you and/or most of the Globe staff prefer for your duties. Thanks again.
12:42
Jim Wilson -  Easy answer: We once used both digital camera systems. However, with some serious testing that we did here at the Globe, we decided to convert to an all-Canon shop. Here's why:
12:43
Jim Wilson -  We felt as though the quality of the image from Canon was better. The pricing was better, and we love the support we get from Canon.
12:44
Jim Wilson -  We hear that the optics of Nikon lenses is better than Canon, but we haven't noticed a difference.
12:44
Jim Wilson -  However, for you Nikon owners, you still have a terrific camera.

Hi Jim,thanks for doing this. What do you think of budget lenses, such as sigma, compared to more expensive lenses.
12:47
Jim Wilson -  They are definitely more affordable -- Sigma, Tamron, etc.   -- and they seem to be as sharp as the brand-name lenses. But we find that they can't handle the wear-and-tear that the more expensive brand names can. Here at the Globe we use all brand name lenses -- in other words, Canon lenses for Canon cameras. From fisheye lenses all the way up to 600mm lenses.

I've compared features, but don't know much about lens and build quality.

There was a great segment on Bill Brett on 'Chronicle' last night...I sometimes envy your job and the new opportunities that each day seems to bring...but the pressure must be difficult. Do you carry multiple lenses on each assignment?
12:51
Jim Wilson -  Yes, we carry multiple lenses and multiple cameras --- 2 camera bodies, each with zoom lenses (usually a short zoom (17-35mm) and longer zoom (70 to 200mm).
12:52
Jim Wilson -  Also in their bag is a fixed 300mm lens and a tele-converter to extend the length of that long lens. Also a flash ... BTW, we usually don't carry bags anymore; we carry waistpacks. Better for the back!
12:53
Jim Wilson -  As for Bill Brett: He hired me here 26 years ago. He's a wonderful man!!!

My equipment tends not be abused, so that will certainly help me make a decision. Thank you.
