Good evening, Dr. Roller. If my wife gets the H1N1 shot, will the immunity be passed along to our newborn son if he is breastfed?
5:41
Dr. Kimberly Roller -  There is not really information about h1n1 and transmission in breast milk.   If a woman gets the season flu vaccine, she does not pass immunity on to her child through breast milk. So experts would probably assume that immunity will not be passed andthat the child needs to be vaccinated as well.

Thanks-- it's my understanding that he can't be vaccinated until he's six months old. Is that accurate?
5:42
Dr. Kimberly Roller -  That is correct. 6 months is the youngest.

Why do they say we need a booster shot for the swine flu vaccine?
5:53
Dr. Kimberly Roller -
Since this  is a "epidemic"  (meaning we have not seen this  type  of flu in many years. ) The thought is that more people will be affected.   This will lead to the virus being in the general public longer.   Hense,  we need longer protection.    That is why a booster  is needed.  There are various distributors for the vaccine, so depending on the vaccine will depend on how many shots a person will get.   More information can be  seen at www.cdc.gov

if you have kids...did you get them the H1N1 shots?
6:14
Dr. Kimberly Roller -

I do have children.   They just received there season flu  vaccine about 10 days ago.   So I am waiting for another week before they get it.     But yes, I will make sure they get it.

HI, if your child is diagnosed with the flu, should you still get the H1N1 vaccination since you are not told for sure if they have H1N1 or just the flu?
6:15
Dr. Kimberly Roller -  Yes,   you should since we don't know 100% that you had the h1n1.
