Responsible and Neutral media definately can help prevent riot. But unfortunately most of the channels are bias and compromised with certain pseudo-secular political parties and some minority groups ,in most of reports the tendency is to showcase minority as victim and majority as perpetrators.

I believe it works both ways..for example in Gujrat even though every national and international media outlet covered the carnage but Modi's support consolidated.

The onus is on the media to first establish its impartial credentials. I do not think TV can prevent riots, this medium can help in delivery of justice by being a powerful witness by recording the incidents honestly and impartially without being judgmental.

Are any of these pvt 24x7 news channels any better than Govt controlled media of the 80's. Why didn't they take up the cause of 84 anti-sikh carnage victims before Jarnail Singh vented out his anger and ashamed the Indian establishment

TV media is powerful enough to influence people towards both positive and negative paths, provided they present facts and truths in an objective manner.Yes,they can prevent communal attacks.

What is your basis for calling 1984 genocide as anti Sikh riots. We do not have any historical evidence of animosity between the Hindus and the Sikhs. There are no incidents of riots recorded pre or post 1984 between Hindus and Sikhs not even when the Khalistani movement was at its peak in Punjab. Is this not doing a disservice to both the communities?

Vikram, the masses in 1984 were a prisoner of a primitive media- state-owned Doordarshan. You think the breakdown of the state's monopoly and the cable/satellite revolution has changed the rules of the game?

[Comment From Ram Jaikishen ]
Vikram, dont quite agree with the line of thought that in the age of YV media riots can be prevented. On the contrary--the only television channel which existed during 84 riots, Doordarshan, played a negative role bytelecasting scenes outside the prime minister’s residence of crowds shouting slogans like ‘khoon ka badla khoon. History shows that such scenes repeatedly during such a volatile situation paved the way for the ensuing riots in Kanpur and other cities of India. The media does at times go overboard..dont you agree ?

Vikram, true that there were no 24-hours news channels then to show the real picture. But did the government really need a video-clipping to convince it about the guilt of leaders who were seen leading murderous mobs following the assassination of Indira Gandhi?"

[Comment From Latika ]
Vikram, has anything changed after 25 years in the Indian media’s perspective on 1984?
