Julie Rovner:

President Obama this morning wandered into what in the past has been the burial ground of health overhaul efforts past -- the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association.

This is a group, remember, that gave Hillary Clinton a standing ovation. So don't judge anything by how polite and/or warm they are.

Started out by reiterating the problem -- again. What Obama said: "If we do not fix our health care system, America may go the way of GM; paying more, getting less, and going broke." What he didn't say: "And end up being run by the govenment..."

What he said. "

If we fail to act, premiums will climb higher, benefits will erode further, the rolls of the uninsured will swell further..." What he didn't say. "And doctors won't have anyone left to pay their bills."

12:28
Julie Rovner:  dead silence from the room when president mentioned people using phrase 'socialized medicine' to scare the public. Perhaps because the AMA coined that particular scare tactic -- back in the 1930s.
12:36
Julie Rovner -  President channels budget director Orszag in pointing out that it's not just demographic driving health care costs up -- it's that we spend too much money on health care we don't necessarily need. And gives a shout-out to Atul Gawande's New Yorker article.

Julie Rovner -  "you entered this profession to be healers -- and that's what our health care system should let you be." big applause line.
12:42
Julie Rovner -  Obama ad-libs from prepared text on comparative effectiveness -- tries to reassure docs they won't have to practice "cookbook" medicine...
12:43
Julie Rovner -  score one for the handlers -- President now knows how to pronounce "Geisinger" in PA..
12:43
Julie Rovner -  he's gotten it wrong the last 3 or 4 times...
12:45
Julie Rovner -  mentions malpractice -- room goes nuts. "don't get too excited yet," he warns.
12:46
Julie Rovner -  "I'm not advocating caps on malpractice awards, which I believe can be unfair to people who've been wrongfully harmed." (sound of air going out of crowd)
12:47
Julie Rovner -

"I do think we need to explore a range of ideas about how to put patient safety first, let doctors focus on practicing medicine, and encourage broader use of evidence-based guidelines."
