Has anything been done (i.e., city ordinances, etc.) to prevent people from elevating their homes above a certain level? Lakeview now has homes that belong on the Mississippi coast and aesthetically they do not fit with the neighborhood. It is nice to have redevelopment but at what expense?

Stephanie Bruno, TP -  Hi Stephen -

There is a relatively new Lakeview Zoning Ordinance which considered the height of buildings. At one point, the goal was to have a 35' height limit.

But because so many needed to elevate due to BFE, the height limit was set at 40'.

Here's the kicker: The height is measured from the ground to 1/2 way up the roof slope. If you are building on a lot set at grade, that's one thing.

But many owners are not only elevating their homes but also their lots. So if a lot is elevated 4' above grade, that means the overall height of the house is even higher.

As far as the height to which a house can be elevated, there are no limits, as long as the overall height conforms to the 40' limit.

Question: WHat nspires architects to design any building as bizarre as that god awful cube on stilts? I mean, if this were the Soviet Bloc, or a town made of LEGOs, it might make some sense...

wayne troyer -  hello guest,

the  "cube on stilts" is an intersting design in that it is representative of the culture and vaules of today. it is a clear  representation  of new building techniques. the lath treatment of the building facade is fresh and elegant. i appreciate the diversitythat this home provides in the neighborhood.

How many homes in Lakeview have been built to any green standards?
12:43
Stephanie Bruno, TP -  Billy P.: Thanks for your question about the number of people building to green standards.

Since a lot of green adaptations are not visible from the street - bamboo floors, low VOC paints, tankless water heaters etc. - it's hard to say. I did not see a lot of solar panels or other such things on the outside of homes.

But I would love to hear from anyone - builders, homeowners - who can give me an idea.

Please email me at housewatcher@hotmail.com and I can fold the information you send into a future story.
