Right now, the vice president is with Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell touring a bridge near Carlisle, something more suited for the television cameras than us with the pen and pads (and laptops).

Biden and entourage will then make their way across the Susquehanna River to the state Capitol media room for a presser.

The goal today is to drum up support for President Barack Obama's stimulus plan, particularly two areas

First, money for roads and bridges. Rendell has identified $1.5 billion of projects "shovel ready" to sure up bridges, repave roads, mitigate traffic congestion and so on.

His hand is out for state money to help make that happen.

The second topic Rendell is lobbying hard for is $500 million in federal aid for Pennsylvania's state budget.

Just last week, Rendell administration officials spoke with confidence the federal money would come through, but as the House and Senate have wrangled over details of the Obama stimulus plan, state aid appears to hang in the balance.

As the Pittsburgh Tribune Review noted today, without the $500 million, Rendell would slash 4,000 jobs and cut funding for basic education, universities, nursing homes and hospitals
