Hi Tori, How did it go yesterday?

Tory Johnson -  Great, thanks for asking Vicky.   We had a terrific NY Women For Hire event - lots of great energy and optimism. I met so many wonderful women!

Question: I was not able to attend due that i was on an assignment what would you say in a cover letter to the company to show interest even though i was not there to meet them

Tory Johnson -  Don't reference where you didn't go - not worth the space.   Instead launch into why you're an ideal match for that position and the organization.   Keep it clear and concise -- only include what you really need to share to capture someone's attention.

I stink at salary negotiations, how do I handle making sure I get the right amount of money for the work I'm doing?
2:07
Tory Johnson -

Hey Mickey -- First step is doing your research.   Use tools like payscale.com and salary.com to understand what the position should pay.   You can also ask the HR dept where your salary falls within the amount budgeted for that position. Sometimes they'll tell you, sometimes they won't.   Don't focus as much on what other people make -- sometimes they're not honest, and other times there are many factors that are taken into consideration such as their prior experience.   Good luck

I am a business consultant/work from home mom and currently have a great product - a 2 hour workshop that covers the basics of a successful job search, including resume writing, where to find jobs, and interview skills - I have presented it in some local venues but am trying to find ways to market to new locations and/or venues. Any suggestions?

Tory Johnson -  Hi Melanie -- keep doing what you're doing.   Use social media too to spread the word. Offer an incentive for referrals from your attendees.   Contact colleges -- including community colleges and programs for adult learners -- as well as community centers, non-profits, associations, job clubs, groups like Dress for Success.   Monitor the news for companies in your area that are going through layoffs. Maybe they can't afford expensive outplacement services, but they'd pay for your course for those who get a pink slip.   Good luck

Do have suggestions for women who not only have the glass ceiling adhered to their careers, but also who entered the workplace beyond youth resulting in superiors that are younger which in turn results in insecure superiors?
