Class 4A state track championships

12:21
Fred Steier -  WElcome to today's 4A Florida State Track and Field Championships from SHowalter Field
12:22
Fred Steier -  Thanks to all of you who sent questions, comments, observations and even humor yesterday for the 3A meet.
12:23
Fred Steier -  It's a warm day again - if we were anywhere else we would probably say hot. Perfectly clear skies   - so no sight of clouds anywhere. Slight breeze, again out the west. Humid.
12:24
Fred Steier -  Bill Ward is already out at the field events with his camera, ready to capture the sights of the meet.

Fred Steier -  Setting the scene: thanks again to those of you who sent in comments and questions, yesterday. Sorry that we weren't able to respond to all of these. We are positioned in the media area, which is about 35 meters from the finish line. So it's a great spot to be in - however, with a good crowd, as there was yesterday and will most certainly be today, we do not have a clear line of site to the finish line. Crowds were three or four (or more) deep along the rail just in front of us. So to get splits, etc., we have to get up and go over to the "mixed zone" - an area just outside of the track by the finish line, where press can get athletes coming off the track after their event. Getting through the crowd to the mixed zone can take some doing, without being too pushy, so what can happen is while we are in transit, lots of questions come in, which is great. But then we try to respond and put our observations - such as leaders, splits, etc. - at the same time. We'll try our best to balance this today
12:31
Fred Steier -  Of course, we could go up top of the stadium where there is also a press box - but then you lose the feel and the pulse of the meet - and miss the opportunity to grab passing comments as we were able to pick up yesterday. So let us know what works best for you - this blog really is for you, the reader
12:35
Fred Steier -  Report from over in the long jump area, which began things with the first flight at noon. Jasmine Pope, from Plant City currently stands in 8th place - so if noone from the second flight jumps further, she will go through to the finals. But if someone exceeds her mark, then she will not go through
