Chat with Rob Demovsky Wednesday, June 24

Rob Demovsky -  Good afternoon. I'll take your questions now.

The mandatory minicamp has wrapped up, and the players and coaches are now off until training camp starts Aug. 1.

Hi Rob, Hope all is well. What is your take on our Rookies, especially B.J. the fullback from LSU, and that late pick DE from Georgia.
2:01
Rob Demovsky -  Mark: Looks to me like Raji might end up playing more at defensive end than nose tackle. That way, they're able to get Raji and Pickett (who will play nose) on the field together in the base defense. ... The FB, Quinn Johnson, looks like a physical specimen, but we haven't seen any full-contact drills yet, so it's hard to tell.  ... Haven't seen much out of Jarius Wynn yet.

Rob - Have either of the Univ of Maryland free agents, Dean Muhtadi and Dane Randolph, made any good impressions on the coaches during minicamp?
2:02
Rob Demovsky -  Chad: Neither got much work during team (11 on 11) drills, which would indicate that they're pretty far down the depth chart.

If you can, send on our prayers to Kampman and all of the rest of Ed Thomas' family and friends.

Rob Demovsky -  Well said Jayme.

Rob, Some Q's arise for me re the O-Line. Barbre played LG for the most part in his time here and never played on the right side. Moll played RG and RT up to now. In 2009, they change sides. This doesn't make sense to me esp. w/ reading somewhere last year that Moll wasn't the long term answer at RT. What would now make him the possible answer at LT? With the spotty and inconsistent play of the O-Line the past few years I'm questioning the coaching. I don't want to throw Campen under the bus but what gives? Bubba

Rob Demovsky -

You raise some good points, Bubba. Here's my take on that stuff. They already know what Moll can do (and can't do) at those other spots. What I mean by that is he's been unable to hold down those jobs, so why waste time with him there? They need someone to line up at LT while Clifton goes through the rehab, so why not throw Moll there. They like Colledge at LG, so why move him to his "second" position, which is LT. It seems wise to leave him at the spot he'll be playing primarily. That's a bit of a philosophical change from the past, when they'd use Colledge as Clifton's backup and then shuffle the guards around. They don't want to do that as much this year. ... They still have hope for Barbre because he's so athletic. My gut still tells me that the rookie, T.J. Lang, will end up being the starting RT on Day One, and that Barbe will be a ultility man again, but I could be wrong.

Hey Rob. Is there a clear leader at punter?
2:08
Rob Demovsky -  Going into this minicamp I would have thought it was Brooks, just based on his pedigree, but I'd have to say that Kapinos out-kicked him during the one extended punting session of htis camp. So I guess that means, no, there isn't a clear-cut leader.

It seems that every practice recap from OTAs and mini camp had something positive to say about Jordy Nelson. What sort of progress should we expect to see from him this year?
2:09
Rob Demovsky -

I spent more time watching the defense during this camp, but I would say that I noticed Nelson a fair amount. Didn't see him drop any balls, but then again, I didn't see him drop many last year, either. He looks like a solid guy who will be around for a long time. His problem is he's got two or three really good WRs ahead of him.

Will Nick Collins learn from the way Greg Jennings took care of his contract business? It's a shame that a guy like Nick making 3 million in his last year of a contract is conducting himself in this manner.
2:11
Rob Demovsky -

They certainly handled their situations differently, Chad. One thing is different, though, and I'm neither defending Collins nor supporting him. He did a five-year contract when he was drafted. Back then, the Packers insisted all of their guys sign five-year deals, which means he lost a year of free agency.

[Comment From Charlie]
At this point, where are the Packers most vulnerable on defense?
2:12
Rob Demovsky -

If you're talking about a position, you'd probably have to say pass rusher, just because it was such a big question mark last year and the fact that their best pass rusher, Aaron Kampman, is switching positions.

I know it's not the same without pads but how does Matthews look? I saw that he would have had a sack the other day, is he consistantly getting to the QB? How does he look in coverage? I know he's been out with injury some.
2:14
Rob Demovsky -  He looks like a natural athlete out there. By that I mean that he moves well, bends his body and changes direction with ease. But it's took hard to judge him in shorts. Would he have gotten to the QB in a real, live drill with pads? No way to know. He seems to be over his hamstring injury from early in the OTAs, but muscle pulls are always worrysome to teams.

Will Bigby be an unrestricted Free Agent after the season?
