College football: Virginia Tech @ Maryland

12:48
roanoketimes -  Greetings from College Park, Md., where we're less than a half-hour from kickoff for the Virginia Tech-Maryland game. The sun is peeking out from behind the clouds, but it's gloomy enough that the lights are on at Byrd Stadium.

The public keeps pounding the Hokies on the Vegas line, which opened at 17 but has mushroomed to 19.5. While I think Ryan Williams will have a big day, I think you've got to take the points. The Hokies have had trouble punching it in for TDs, and you've got to figure Frank Beamer might take the foot off the gas against embattled pal Ralph Friedgen if Tech is up comfortably late in the game.

Beat man Randy King disagrees vehemently with me here, but I say snatch up the Terps and the 19.5.

Duke is beating them at this point. Would this put us back in the picture for acc title.

roanoketimes -  John, Miami beat Georgia Tech on a Thursday night earlier this season. And yes, if Duke can pull this out -- and beat Miami later -- the Hokies would be back in the picture. Needless to say, that's a lot.

roanoketimes -  Big drama as we await the coin toss. If the Hokies lose the flip, they'll be 0-for-10 on the season. The odds of that are 1,024 to 1.

roanoketimes -  And...the Hokies lose the toss. The incredible streak continues.

roanoketimes -  That didn't take long. Tyrod Taylor hooks up with Jarrett Boyken for a 30-yard pass on Tech's first drive, setting up a 1-yard TD run by Ryan Williams, and the Hokies lead 7-0 with 10:53 remaining in the first quarter. The drive was 10 plays for 71 yards, taking 4:07 off the clock. The Hokies picked up two third downs.

roanoketimes -  Jamarr Robinson starts at QB for the Terps.

roanoketimes -  A Williams run for no gain and two Taylor incompletions force a punt. Terps start at their own 21 trailing 7-0 with 8:37 left in the first.
