Dan Gottlieb -

Welcome everyone to today's chat. I am pleased to welcome Dr. Tamar Chansky. She is the director of the children's Center for OCD and anxiety in Plymouth Meeting. She has authored several books including:

Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking: Powerful, Practical Strategies to Build a Lifetime of Resilience, Flexibility and Happiness.

Her website is:

And we are also looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experience with children trying too hard to be too good.

Tamar, welcome. So let's start with the obvious question -- here or kids trying to do the best they can at everything they do. What's the matter with that?

12:03
Tamar Chansky -  If only it were that simple! I think that kids are feeling the pressure of the future weighing on them at much earlier ages, and that has resulted in kids not knowing what else to do, but try to do well in everything-- otherwise they believe that they will fail in life.
12:05
Tamar Chansky -  Not only is the premise wrong, but it can lead to a lot of stress and anxiety, and actually to kids quitting prematurely because they begin to doubt that they can succeed. Of course the health impact is great too-- kids are not getting enough sleep and this can impact mood, attention, and a host of other problems.
