hi just wondering how to stop cravings of sugary foods, trying to lose 7 pounds is not easy!

[Comment From Joy Bauer]
Here is a strategy that has worked for many dieters I've counseled: cut out ALL sugars (real and artificial) for 7 days -- in other words, go cold turkey, to clean your palate. After that, tightly control your sugar intake by allowing yourself the option for "up to" two things with artificial sweetener each day (if you must) AND one daily sweet treat portioned at 150 calories or less (i.e., fun size candy bar). Save that sweet treat for later in the day so it doesn't exacerbate more sweet cravings. Good luck... I have the same sweet tooth and work hard to control it as well!

WHAT IS THE BENIFIT OF FLAX SEED?
11:39
Joy Bauer -  Flax seed provides a few impressive nutrients; soluble fiber, lignons, some protein and omega 3 fats (although the type of omega 3 fat is much less potent than the type in fatty fish).

Hey Joy, Does drinking a lot of water, really helps you to loose weight and to burn calories? Or is that conventional wisdom?
11:43
Joy Bauer -  drinking water does not burn calories... but it helps to wash fiber-rich food through your digestive system and can often help take the edge off hunger. Research has shown that when water is built into foods (i.e., juicy fruits and vegetables) it truly does help to fill us up... so we eat less and ultimately lose weight. So although water doesn't burn calories... it's all good and conducive to dieting, so drink up!

Hi Joy, I have started reading your book and it looks like a do-able program. What are your best tips for getting my 41 year old female metabolism going?
11:46
Joy Bauer -  keep eating every 4-5 hours and follow the meal plan. I promise, it WORKS! And thanks for giving it a go :-)

[Comment From Dana]
What are some good ways of incorporating more fiber into my daily diet?
11:49
Joy Bauer -  Incorporate more fiber into you diet with the following foods: high fiber breakfast cereals (at least 3+ grams per serving), whole wheat bread (2+ grams per slice), lentils, beans, vegetables (4+ servings/day) and fresh fruit (2 servings a day). Remember to drink plenty of water to wash the extra fiber down!

I have been dieting and exercising for six weeks and I still haven't lost a pound! Help! I am 51 and on HRT. Does that have something to do with it?
11:52
Joy Bauer -  HRT should not have anything to do with it... that said, make sure to request a thyroid panel and check for hypothyroidism. If your bloods are all normal.... you most probably have to amp up your exercise and lower your calories. Unfortunately, it gets tougher and tougher to lose weight as we get older :-( BUT you can prevail, so never give up.

Hi Joy, love your diet advice! Just wondering: Is it OK to have a glass of red wine -- 5 nights a week -- before I go to bed? I heard red wine is good for you, but I've also heard its best not to consume extra calories before going to sleep.
11:56
Joy Bauer -  Thanks, Rina! having "up to" one glass of wine a day is okay for women.... unless you are at high risk for breast cancer, have high triglycerides,... or have sleep disturbances. If you don't fall into any of these categories.... enjoy the extra 120 calories.

Is there a "safe" snack I can have before bedtime?
12:00
Joy Bauer -  Sure. If you're trying to lose weight, I recommend anything 150 calories or less (piece of fruit, one ounce dark chocolate, low-fat ice cream pop, 4 cups light popcorn, 20 toasted almonds or 30 pistachio nuts in the shell). These PM calories will not turn to fat if you're collective calories for the entire day remain appropriate.

I just want to thank you for your wonderful book. I purchased it a few months ago, and have already lost 47 pounds. My life is completely changed. I was feeling a bit down the other day. Normally I would go to the grocery store and buy a cake or cookies. I wanted something sweet, so I splurged by buying some precut fruit salad and a beautiful piece of fish. It was a real treat for me and there was no guilt associated with it afterwards. Thank you for changing my life, but most importantly for changing my view of myself.

Joy Bauer -  Your email just made my day. Thanks for taking the time to write it... and BIG congratulations on your tremendous accomplishment!
