[Comment From Phil]
Hi Mary. I adopted a 4 year old Lab/Newfoundland mix about six months ago. I believe his previous owners must have had a fenced in yard because he doesn not do well on a leash. He is well behaved otherwise. What's the best way to leash train an older dog that is stuck in his ways?

Mary Remer -  Hi Phil - To start set up a positive association with the leash clip it on a couple of times a day and encourage him to move around with the leash on. Use some treats. Then start picking up the leash and walking backwards and giving him cookies for following you. And, then slowly start having him on your left side and moving forward. You can just start in the driveway and have a little bowl of treats. Walking gets him a reward. The other thing to do is to put him in the car, drive him a block and then walk him home on the leash to get him used to it. So, the leash becomes a positive association.

What do you suggest to keep our hound-mix from going squirrel-crazy during her walks?

Mary Remer -  Hi B - The chase instinct in hounds is very high. So, chasing small animals is a genetically resonating behavior (i.e. feels good to the soul of the dog). I would consider desensitizing to a Gentle Leader and then when I walk her take her breakfast in the morning and her dinner at night, mix in some 5-star treats such as chix, beef, or pasta and reward her heavily for ignoring. Do your best to keep a distance. Also, walk in serpentines and make circles so you aren't always walking in straight lines going forward.
