Mayor's Race 2009: Post-Debate Chat with Brian and Andrea

7:54
Andrea Bernstein -  Hello all, according to wikipedia there are 540 calories in a big mac....but weightlossfor all puts it at 495...
7:56
javirgan -  Hi all. Debate wrapping up in a few. Andrea appears to be here already, fact-checking calorie counts. Brian will join soon after the debate is over. You can start posting questions and reactions now. Please note that these go through a moderation process, so may take a bit to go live.
7:58
Andrea Bernstein -  "Thompson is a great golfer and we've done a lot of great things together"
But Thompson says Bloomberg's game has improved -- and he's well dressed.

Those are the NICE things they said.
7:59
Andrea Bernstein -  "Eight years is enough"
"Eight years is NOT enough"

That's what it comes down to.

Jody Avirgan (WNYC) -  That was the scene just before the debate started. You can see Brian tweeting away alongside the other panelists. More pics at the wnyc flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wnyc/

Andrea Bernstein -  Okay all, while Brian is unhooking his mic and finding a computer...here are my thoughts.   Both candidates had some strong moments and both had moments when the other looked weak.       Thompson was immediately put on the defensive when he said that he wasn't real in charge of the Board of Education when he headed it.   Techincally true, but a difficult argument to make to viewers.   As for Bloomberg, when he said that his decision to run again was based on appeals from friends and strangers, well, THAT's a tough sell, also.
8:06
Andrea Bernstein -  Can anyone who was in the hall enlighten the rest of us as to what the disruption was at the beginning?
8:06
Jody Avirgan (WNYC) -  It's getting a little crowded here in the "spin room." Hopefully Brian can wade through the crowd. Keep posting your questions for Andrea and each other. In addition, we'll post polls every once in a while to get a sense of your take.

Got on late. Was there any mention of protecting union jobs? Or is this whole city's construction industry going down the toilet to companies that pay people off the books and ignore laws?

I thought the "Lightning Round" questions were silly.

[Comment From Matt]
I missed Brian's question on zoning due to the call letters announcement. What did he ask?
8:09
Andrea Bernstein -  More thoughts...I'm not sure Thompson made the case FOR himself, though he was often effective at making the case AGAINST Bloomberg, particularly when it came to term limits and affordability.   But did any get a better sense of Thompson as Mayor from this?
8:10
Jody Avirgan (WNYC) -  Matt- Brian asked about Bloomberg's statement that rezoning was as big an accomplishment as education reform. Bloomberg defended the zoning, claiming that much of what people are unhappy about was put into action before his first term.

[Comment From George]
Who was the heckler at the beginning?
8:11
Jody Avirgan (WNYC) -  Heckler at the beginning was Billy Talen aka Reverend Billy.

No real sense as to Thompson as Mayor. However if you are really passionate about term limits, go for Thompson!

[Comment From Lisa Berger]
Does Thompson REALLY think Espada is a better senate majority leader....and I'm a lifelong Democrat and I couldn't say YES.
