Chat with Globe columnist Bob Ryan at noon

Boston.com -  Hi folks, Bob is just about ready to go, so bring on those Patriots questions, and anything else on your mind.

I know after week one players that are signed that the contract isnt guaranteed . Do you think the Patriots have players they are looking to sign? Maybe a back up QB
11:58
Bob Ryan -           I've thought all along that the official back-up QB would be Mr X, who isn't here yet. Cutting it a little close, aren't we? I can't believe Coach Bill will have Brian Hoyer, and only Brian Hoyer, standing between Tom Brady and direct snapping to Kevin Faulk.

What's the latest on Brace? I would think Buffalo is a good starter for him because of the weak O-line but is he ready? Tell me what you see.
11:59
Bob Ryan -           The latest? They like him. He's backing up Vince Wilfork. He's a kid, albeit a very large one. Can't project how much he'll play.

Love your work, Bob. Granted that the games were against the sinking Rays, there's gotta be some optimism with how well Beckett, Buchholz, and Lester pitched. I'd take our three over any other three starters (from one team) in the AL right now. Thoughts?
12:03
Bob Ryan -             It's a very fluid situation. Right now, based on the most recent results, I'm very comfortable wityh Lester, pretty comfortable with Bucholz, and still worried about Beckett, who does, however, have that glittering post-season resume. We know the Yankees are very concerned about Burnett. Verlander may be the scariest starter of 'em all when the playoffs come, but the rest of Detroit's rotation is manageable. The Angels have a bunch of number twos, threes and fours, unless you consoider Lackey a certified ace.  Don't need to remind you that the Red Sox aren't exactly awed by him, do I? So you may be right.

Hey Bob, what do you think of ESPNboston?
12:04
Bob Ryan -         They stole Mike Reiss from us, so they seem to know personnel. Too soon to know anything other than that.

Love these chats...you must have one of the best jobs in the world! With Ray Allen wanting a extension I would think the Celtics would be crazy to give him many years at his age. Aren't there some great players they can pick up the summer of 2010 and who do you think they might be able to sign?
12:08
Bob Ryan -       No way Ray's getting any big money extension at his age. Everyone's making the goo-goo eyes at the free agent crop that will be available in the summer of 2010, Celtics included. But a far more important matter is that the Celtics are one of only five teams that can win THIS year. Talking 'bout LA and SA out West, plus Cle, Celts and (maybe) Orlando in the East. So stop worrying about 2010 and remember that this is probably the last chance for the Big Three to get another title.

Hey Bob! Wondering what your thoughts were on the possibility of trading Rondo away for cash to free up money to sign D-Wade? This also gives us some security in the event that we fail to re-sign Ray Allen and I believe that Wade will be a better fit than Lebron anyway.
12:10
Bob Ryan -    There's a better chance of the Lions winning thebNFC Cetntral than of D-Wade ever coming here. I don't think he's going anywhere. My gut says Chris Bosh has a good chance of joining him in South Beach.

Bob: How far do you see the Sox going this year (be honest!)? I like the Beckett/Lester/Buch tandem against the Angels, but something seems "off" this year about the team and I don't feel as confident as '08, '07 or '04.
12:13
Bob Ryan -           My opinion changes by the hour. We all feel much better now than we did a week ago, correct? It still seems set up for the Yankees, but they have no sure thing in the ALDS after C.C., and he has a shoddy post-season history. So there's hope. How sad will it be in SoCal if the Red Sox knock off the Angels again? I still like the Phillies better than the Cards and Dodgers. Maybe we'll have a re-enactment of the 1915 World Series.

Bob, Theo made three great moves to get this back on track Victor Martinez, Wagner & Alex G. What do you think?
12:16
Bob Ryan -       Theo's once again looking like The Smartest Kid In The Class with those three. And throw in Buchholz, because there was a choice to be made between him and Masterson.   Damned if I know what's gotten into Penny, but it's officially pissing me off. Smoltzie's got an owie already, in case you didn't know. You think the pitchers don't love knowing every ground ball to shorttis a guaranteed 6-3 or 6-4/FC?

[Comment From Brett from WPB,FL]
Hey Bob, what are the chances the red sox go hard after hanley ramirez next season?
12:17
Bob Ryan -             I put nothing past Theo. Or the Marlins.

[Comment From Mike]
Bob, Why isn't Ellsbury getting his due around here. 60 plus steals hitting 300, great defense?
