Live chat: Ask experts about Swine flu

11:58
Cindy George -

Thank you for coming to our discussion about H1N1 flu.

We're joined today by two Houston pediatric physicians. Dr. Gordon E. Schutze is a pediatric infectious disease specialist who teaches at Baylor College of Medicine and practices at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Paul Sirbaugh, a pediatric emergency medicine expert, is associate medical director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Emergency Center. He’s also a pediatrics professor at Baylor College of Medicine.

11:59
Dr Sirbaugh -  Hello and thank you for the invitation.
11:59
Dr. Schutze -  Hello, it is my pleasure to be here
11:59
Cindy George -  Wonderful. Let's start with a brief situation update. What are you seeing at Texas Children's?
12:01
Dr Sirbaugh -  We are seeing the normal patient conditions but in addition we are seeing an increase in flu like illness.     The majority of patients are being treated as outpatients - in other words they are being discharged from our emergency center and outpatient clinics after their visits.

I notice that a lot of kids at schools are geeting the swine flu. Why is there not a panic like when it first came out
12:05
Dr Sirbaugh -  When the virus first entered the community, noone knew what to expect.   Most were anticipating an early flu season with large volumes of patients but noone wanted to underestimate the possibility of sicker patients.
12:05
Cindy George -  Several of our early questions ask   "Who should get the H1N1 vaccine?"
Here's the priority list and a link to a post on MedBlog from July:

Pregnant women
Household contacts and caregivers for children under 6 months
Health care workers and emergency medical responders
Children and young adults from 6 months to 24 years old
People ages 25 to 64 with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes
12:06
Dr Sirbaugh -  We now have a little more experience now and realize that most of the children are presenting with typical flu like symptoms.
12:06
Cindy George -  Doctors: With vaccine trickling in, who should be the VERY first in line?
