Chat with Two Cents' Tom Jones

12:00

Hey gang, Tom Jones here, ready to talk about whatever it is you want to talk about ... Bucs, Rays, Lightning, college football and, the subject near and dear to me, sports media.

We already have an early question, sent in by a good buddy and former co-worker of mine about a million years ago, David Alfonso. David writes:

Hey Tom, what do you make of all the jocks having trouble in cabs these days?
Personally I think it'd be great of one of them got hooked with cabbie Travis Bickel.
Talib: "Just drive the f#%$!*& cab.''
Bickel: "You talkin' to me?"
Talib then whomps Tavis up side the head.
Bickel then saves Goodell the trouble of imposing a penalty.
(For you youngsters, Bickel is the central character in the great 1976 movie Taxi Driver; if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and do).

Good stuff, Fonz! And I second you thoughts that Taxi Driver is a GREAT movie. Scorcese and DeNiro in their primes!

Hey, Tom, love your column. What do you think about the Bucs' chances of going .500 or better this year?
12:11
Thanks, Rusty. What do I think of the Bucs chances of going .500? Not much. I think it's going to be a looooong season. The record 3-13 keeps popping up into my head and, yet, when I look at the schedule, I have a tough time finding even three wins. You know how NFL Films comes up with cute little slogans for their team films? I think the 2009 Bucs film will be something like, "Rebuilding to Glory'' or some such thing.

[Comment From Greg]
what are you thoughts on the new Bucs coach?
12:17
So far, Greg, I think the jury is still out. I like his energy, and I think he knows what he's doing, but time will tell. I think he's at a crossroads already. If the league doesn't discipline Aqib Talib for his cab incident (assuming Talib was at fault) then I think Raheem Morris needs to do something to send a message that such behavior won't be tolerated in this organization. It's an early test for him and it will be interesting to see how he handles it.

[Comment From Greg]
what do you think he should do with all those delinquents on the team
12:19
These kinds of "messes,'' shall we say, go on everywhere. I think back to last year when Pittsburgh's Santonio Holmes was arrested for marijuana and was immediately benched by coach Mike Tomlin. Holmes got the message and turned into the Super Bowl MVP. Send an early message and everyone falls in line. I think that's why this Talib mess is important to follow.

[Comment From Stephen]
Tom, reports today suggest Bucs are "gauging" interest in their 3 QBs (Freeman not include). What's the real story on the QB position?
12:22
Well, Stephen, one of our Bucs writers, Stephen Holder, says he absolutely believes the Bucs are shopping their QBs. Question is, can you really get much for either, say, McCown or Leftwich? I think coach Raheem Morris knows who he wants as his starter, but there's a disagreement inside the organization. That's my gut feeling on it.
12:24
A reader with the handle "Chocolate Rain'' had a pretty funny analogy comparing Leftwich and McCown, but don't think I can publish it here. But his point is that neither option is really that good and it's hard to disagree with that. It's not like the option at QB is between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. If it were me, I think I'd lean toward McCown just because of his ability to make plays with his legs.
