New Orleans Saints: One bailout worth the cost

11:00
Jeff Crouere -  Should the New Orleans Saints receive any bailout funds from the State of Louisiana?
11:03
[Comment From TH]
I will start my 40th year with season tickets next season and I will not renew in 2010 (if they are here) unless they make the playoffs. I have had enough of mostly losing seasons and they have gotten enough of my money. I know it's an economic impact on the city and state, but there are more important issues, i.e., health care and education, affecting this state other than the Saints. I don't think the state should provide any bailout funds.
11:05
Jeff Crouere -  Joining me today for the on-line chat will be State Representative Tim Burns (R-Mandeville). Tim, is this a good idea for state taxpayers?
11:06
Jeff Crouere -  TH,

Do you think losing the Saints will cause harm to our state in any way?
11:07
[Comment From TH]
How much more harm can this state take? We've pretty much hit rock bottom.

[Comment From EJ]
No. No!

[Comment From LL]
If you are serious about the recovery of this area, I think that keeping both the Saints and the Hornets here should be top priority. California is in a lot more trouble financially than Louisiana, but no one has brought up the issue of funding one of their many sports franchises. That is because they know how valuable those fan bases are to those areas.
11:08
Jeff Crouere -  I agree and some would say that losing the Saints would just cause more harm to our region.

[Comment From JACK]
Since we subsidize the teams, Like Obama we should tell them to limit salaries to $500,000 .
11:08
[Comment From TH]
We also don't have the fan base that they do.
11:09
Jeff Crouere -  Jack,

That is a great point. The team receives a bailout, how do you think the players woluld like their salary limited to 500K. There would be  a revolt.

[Comment From LL]
TH, last time I checked there was still a waiting list for Saints season tickets and the Hornets ticket sales are much higher this year than last.
11:10
Jeff Crouere -

LL,

The fan base is amazing. A recent study showed that the New Orleans Saints fans are the most loyal in all of professional sports. We support a losing team better than anyone else.

That's folliy: TOO much reliance on dome/Saints as "saviors" of economy ...
11:10
[Comment From TH]
They have a strong union. It would never happen.
11:10
[Comment From JACK]
It woulld show they really care!
11:10
[Comment From TH]
Yes, there is a waiting list now but I don't see it lasting much longer.

[Comment From JACK]
If we are going to cap other corporate GIANTS making millions per year why not SPORTS players?
11:11
[Comment From LL]
This is a concern only b/c our state government is making it a concern. Like I said, this isnt a concern of places like California that is up to its eyeballs in debt. They cant even afford to pay their teachers there.
11:12
Jeff Crouere -  What is also interesting is that no other state in the country gives a direct financial bailout to their sports team. Should Louisiana be the only state that gives cash to wealthy owners?
