Live Blogging Election Results

7:00
Mark Memmott (NPR) -  It's 7 pm and the polls have just closed in Virginia. Which means that all the networks are about to call the big race in the state for governor. We believe they will be calling it for Republican Bob McDonnell but let's just wait to see exactly what happens.
7:02
Frank James (NPR) -  It's actually Frank James here, not Mark Memmott, liveblogging tonight.
7:02
Frank James (NPR) -  I forgot to change the settings.

Frank James (NPR) -  CNN is saying that Bob McDonnell is leading Creigh (pronounced Cray) Deeds. They aren't calling the race yet.

[Comment From Thomas Cizauskas]
IF Creigh Deeds loses in Virginia, it's because he ran away from President Obama. If that's the case, I'm hoping at least for a split ticket.

[Comment From Mike C]
It's time to put checks and balances back into government :)
7:04
Frank James (NPR) -  Thomas at 7:03 says if Deeds loses it will be becayse he ran away from Obama. Maybe. But Deeds was a very mediocre candidate. Bad candidates tend to lose elections regardless of who's president.

what would it mean if both states went republican?

NJ may not be put away for the Reps yet. Tricky state, that one.

[Comment From Ariel Edwards-Levy]
Assuming McDonnell wins as seems likely, is the margin an indicator of anything to come, or are all of tonight's races pretty much independent?

[Comment From Richard]
Mike is write, we baddly need checks and balances, heavey ones
7:06
Frank James (NPR) -  CNN has it 60 to 30 McDonnell to Deeds when it comes to indies. Younger voters going for Deeds with 52 percent. McDonnell is getting 55 percent of older voters.
7:06
Ken Rudin -  Timing is everything.   Ken Rudin here, just did a two-way with our Newscast unit.   Sorry to be absent for our official launch.

[Comment From Brie W.]
I thought it was pronounced Cree. Meanwhile, he seemed just generally weak - awkward and nervous most of the time. Corzine too is just unlikeable, as so many have said. If the Dems do get whooped, maybe they'll learn a lesson.
7:06
Frank James (NPR) -  Hey Ken. Glad to see you.
7:06
Ken Rudin -  It is Cree Deeds.   But the proper pronunciation is "Governor" McDonnell.   Lots of reasons for that, assuming that's what happens tonight.
