[Comment From James]
sweet
11:09
Brief pause as we move to a quieter location.
11:10
Steve - web 2.0 began with blogging then wikis and is now moving into social networking.
11:10
[Comment From James]
will this be archived? I'd like to back channel but have to leave...
11:10
There was some debate as to if social networking should be anything involving collaboration with others.
11:11
@james You should be able to find it at
inpractice.edublogs.org
later.
11:12
What sort of social networking do we want to dicuss today? All forms including delicious and such or more focused on ning and such?
11:13
So, if we want to discuss all forms do they belong in education?
11:13
Facebook and My Space are blocked often. What does that mean for education?
11:14
If things are blocked we need to look at alternatives. We need to bring these tools into our schools to prepare students.
11:15
Steve - 2 reasons to bring these tools into schools.
1-the world is using them so we need to prepare students
2-they are pedagogically sound - there are reasons for these tools for learning
11:16
Stever - profile page becomes an eportfolio - 'friending' makes for building networks - content repositories for storing work
11:18
One comment that Steve has just described ning. The idea is that using ning allows for these options more easily than creating a blog and requiring the teacher to 'drive the thing'.
11:19
Is the tool that important? We should be helping students learn the skills to use the various tools.
11:19
Some tools are not available to younger students. That is a challenge.
11:21
We need to find ways to evaluate tools (ones designed for education and others) in order to use them well.
11:22
Students are using these tools to talk to people all around the world. When we try to use these in schools we limit them.
11:24
We need to help students understand the implications of what they put online. They need to control their online output.
11:25
New question - what if we don't use these tools? What are the implications if we don't teach these tools?
