Is it OK to fry foods using olive oil?
11:59
Molly Gee, MEd, RD -

It's fine to stir fry, but not at too high temperatures because it breaks down.   Certainly, you cannot deep fat fry with it.

Speaking of olive oil, I often only use olive oil on my salads. If I'm going fat-free, is that bad? I brother said olive oil is not fatty if not heated.

Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  Basically, olive oil is a great oil because it fits into the healthy Mediterranean style of eating.   Wishful thinking, the oil still contains calories regardless of if it's used on salad or in cooking.

And if I can ask a question about cheese: is Feta fatty?
12:02
Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  Yes, all cheeses have a higher fat content.   The good news is, because of the strong flavor, you can use less of it.

I've tested as borderline diabetic twice now. Diabetes runs in my family. So I've stopped eating things like sugar in my coffee, I don't eat any candy. I've stopped pretty much all refined sugars. Should I quit fruit juice as well? What other diet changes should I make?
12:04
Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  Congratulations for making those changes.   Whole fruit is always better because of the fiber than fruit juices if possible.   However, you don't need to avoid fruit juices.   Try to have it with a meal.   Best advice, don't let more than four to five hours to between a meal or snack to maintain good blood sugar control.

I love bread, but know it is bad for me name some breads substitution i can us instead
12:07
Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  I love bread, too.   Enjoy whole grain breads.   Check the fiber content for at least 2 to 3 grams of fiber per slice.   There's so many varieties to choose from.   Bread substitutes, there are so many (pastas, white rice)  that are not as nutritious as the whole grain breads.

I have recently started following a clean eating diet. I'm trying to pack my lunch each day and eat about 5 small meals a day. I basically combine a protein with a good carb at each meal. Do you have any comment on the clean eating way of life? I'm not really counting calories but trying to limit my portons. My goal is to lose about 70 lbs. following the birth of 2 children (2 and 3).

Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  Can you clarify what clean eating means?

i am post menepausal and my cholesterol has gone screaming up (250). is it too late and i am doomed to take Lipitor or can i get this back down just by diet? i have been adding almonds, flax seed meal, berries but my husband still makes alot of beef dishes for dinner. what kind of fish is best?
12:10
Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  Family history is the biggest determination of your cholesterol levels after menopause.   Sounds like you've got a good start lowering your cholesterol by diet.   Salmon and tuna are the best choices in the fish family.   Don't forget exercise.   Check with your physician about whether medication is necessary.

I have started a vigorous workout: the P90X. I am 42 years old and since turning 40, my metabolism has shut down. How many calories do I need to eat in order to be able to work out while losing weight?
12:13
Molly Gee, MEd, RD -  Unfortunately our metabolism does slow down as we get older.   Your workout is a great strategy to combat that.   Without more information it's hard to pinpoint a specific calorie level.   However, the intense workout requires more calories.   By not having enough calories, you would actually slow down your metabolism.   Make sure you have enough energy.

basically all foods in their natural state, no added "bad" things. Mostly whole grains, protein sources like chicken, fish, beef occasionally, no white foods (rice, flour, pasta), dairy is ok if fat free, greek yogurts, nuts like almonds and walnuts, water mostly or decaf green tea or coffee. No sugar (white). I use Splenda and have recently found Agave Nectar as a sweetner. The food must be as close to its natural state as possible. Olive oil is ok and great for your fat. Nut butters are good if natural, like almond butter or natural PB

Molly Gee, MEd, RD -

Portion control is always a key strategy in succesful weight loss.   Spreading your calories over five small meals is a great way to keep your energy up and not feel deprived.   A good goal would be one to two pounds per week weight loss.   Good luck!
