3A title: Shelley vs. Fruitland

7:01
Michael.Lycklama -  There's 6 minutes left in the Declo-Parma 2A game so it's time to get the Shelley live blog running.
7:01
Michael.Lycklama -  First, let's go through a quick primer on what to expect from the live blog. I'll write updates throughout the game for big plays and scoring. I can't do play-by-play, watch the game and keep stats at the same time. But the beautiful function of the live blog is it lets you interact. You can ask me, or the audience, at any time, offer an insight or just root for your team. Just write in the box below, it will show up to me and after the first time, you'll be allowed to post instantly. Get it? Got it? Good?

Michael.Lycklama -  The Post Register had a feature on this game in today's paper here. If this matchup sounds familiar, that's because it is. Shelley beat Fruitland 19-13 in the same building for the 2007 3A title.

In fact, these two teams have combined to four of the past six 3A titles. This will be Fruitland's fourth consecutive trip to the finals, with only one title in the previous three tries. Shelley won in all odd years, 2003, 2005, 2007 and will look to keep the streak alive in 2009.

Michael.Lycklama -  I picked Shelley to win this game 20-14 in my weekly picks column, which you can read in full here.

But here's the excerpt for this game:

Shelley vs. Fruitland

Stop me if this sounds familiar — Shelley will face Fruitland for a state title.

Whether it’s football or basketball, these two teams have been head and shoulders above the rest of the 3A classification for the past decade, building a rivalry despite being separated by more than 300 miles of sage brush.

And with Shelley in its last year in 3A, what better to go out than a battle to determine the team of the decade?

As always, be ready for physical running attacks from both teams. Shelley’s two-headed attack of Aaron Adams and Gabe Nii has piled up 2,294 yards on the ground while Fruitland’s two-headed attack of Jordan Martin and Daulton Blackwell has rushed for 2,166 yards.

But Shelley coach Dwight Richins makes an excellent point. Because the strength of both teams is running and stopping the run, the passing game might make the difference.

“The break (today) may come from the passing game,” Richins said. “Whoever can exploit the other throwing the football may have an advantage.”

And I trust Chase Richins more than I trust Fruitland quarterback Ryan Wright, who didn’t attempt a pass last week, because he didn’t need to.

But in the end, do you really think Shelley will exit 3A without a football title? I don’t.

Shelley 20, Fruitland 14

Michael.Lycklama -  For the Fruitland angle, check out the Idaho Statesman's preview here.

It's pretty amazing Fruitland has made it back to this game for the fourth straight year considering it returned just one starter - offensive and defensive lineman Justin Wallace - from last year's runner up. In fact, Wallace is just one of six seniors and the only senior to start.

On the flip side, Shelley's roster features 19 seniors.

Zach.Kyle -  Players to watch

Fruitland:

RB Daulton Blackwell - 135 carries for 1,096 yards and 24 TDs

RB - Jordan Martin - 141 carries for 1,070 yards and 11 TDs

Blackwell, a sophomore, is Fruitland's speed back. Fruitland runs mostly between the tackles, but Blackwell can bounce outside from there for big gains. Martin, a junior, is a more physical, north and south style runner.

Shelley:

RB Aaron Adams - 1,387 yards rushing

RB Gabe Nii - 907 yards rushing

QB Chase Richins and RB McCade Bono saw more action in the running game early on, but as Shelley's 11-0 season has rolled on, Adams and Nii have shouldered more of the load. Adams runs up the middle, often dragging defenders with him. He has carried Shelley through its playoff run.

Nii's speed around the ends punishes defenses loading up the middle to stop Adams. Now that he's finally recovered from a nagging hip injury, Nii is running at full speed, and the Astroturf at Holt Arena only makes him faster.

Michael.Lycklama -  The 30 minute pregame clock has just started. We're scheduled for a 7:52 start.

so no shelley bias whatsoever? when was the last time Shelley held a team to zero points in a semifinal game(fruitland did last week). should be a great game....thinks FHS is a lil hungrier though...they did beat weiser 28-7 while shelley only beat them 19-7. Good luck to both teams though...Go Grizzlies!!
