Jason Sobel's Live Analysis From Day 3 at the Presidents Cup

10:13
Kevin Maguire, ESPN.com -  Welcome to Day 3 of the Presidents Cup where a total of 10 points are up for grabs in two separate sessions. ESPN.com's Jason Sobel will join us at 10:45 a.m. ET to share his live analysis of all the day's events from Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, Calif.

@JasonSobel -  Gotta admit, I've felt a little empty so far this week. Doing the Live Blog for just one afternoon  session each day? Too easy. That's barely a half day's work.

But as Crocodile Dundee might have said if he was a golf blogger instead of a knife-wielding Aussie, "That's not a Live Blog. This is a Live Blog!"

(Sorry, that was weak -- just wanted to get the Paul Hogan reference in there since he'll be playing the part of Greg Norman in the straight-to-cable film, "Presidents Cup '09: Shark's Revenge.")

That's because I'll be here at Harding Park GC for all five morning foursomes matches -- scheduled to begin in just a minute -- and all five afternoon four-balls matches, giving you some 10 hours of live coverage during the day. With the U.S. holding a slight 6.5-5.5 advantage over its International opponent, plenty could happen prior to tomorrow's 12 singles matches.

As always, you can submit your questions, comments, suggestions, threats, poetry, rap songs and other minutiae on this page or via Twitter to username @JasonSobel. You may now swing away ...

@JasonSobel -  The session is now under way, as the opening match of Phil Mickelson and Sean O'Hair vs. Retief Goosen and Camilo Villegas has just teed off.

Mickelson has carried each of his partners -- Anthony Kim and Justin Leonard -- for long stretches over the first two days and may need to do that again here, as the rookie O'Hair failed to post a single birdie in 15 holes yesterday.

As for the International team, seems like a weird pairing for Greg Norman. In alternate shot, you often want to team like-minded players, but whereas Goosen is a solid, conservative type of guy, Villegas is ultra-aggressive. Could be an oil-and-water type of situation out here for them.

@JasonSobel -

Four players are riding the pine during this morning's foursomes session -- two from each team.

And yes, there are some surprises in there.

For the U.S., Lucas Glover and Anthony Kim are sitting out. Personally, I may have given Sean O'Hair and/or Kenny Perry a rest -- as would you, based on yesterday's poll -- but that may be in the cards for the afternoon session. Still, not a bad call by Fred Couples (and assistant Jay Haas, who doesn't get enough credit as the real brains behind the operation). Glover didn't make a putt all day yesterday and AK has looked lost at times.

Greg Norman's decision is a bit more quizzical. He is resting reigning Masters champ Angel Cabrera,  although his  game does seem to suit the four-balls format much better. But the other one is the biggest surprise, as Geoff Ogilvy -- the International team points lead through the qualification process and the team's top-ranked player -- is sitting out, too.

With two WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship titles, Ogilvy has established himself as one of the world's preeminent match-play competitors, but that hasn't quite translated into team competition. So far he is 0-2-0 this week and 1-5-0 in his career with a partner.

@JasonSobel -

With a much earlier start time than the first two days, it's obviously a bit cooler right now than it's been during the competition so far. The temperature gauge in the rental car read 50 degrees about an hour ago.

Still, it should warm up throughout the day. Weather hasn't been a factor yet, and shouldn't be this weekend, either.

Do you think Phil Mickelson's resurgence will carry over to next year's schedule? He seems to have figured something with his putting.
11:11
@JasonSobel -

Clearly, Mickelson has looked terrific with the flatstick since working with Dave Stockton recently, but we'll see how long it lasts. Not that I'm pessimistic, but it's difficult to keep it going for a while after making such changes.

@JasonSobel -

Just walked past Tiger Woods as I was headed toward the first tee and he was going toward the practice green.

"Twitter?" he asked, seeing me pecking away at the PDA.

Nope, live blog. But thanks for reading.

@JasonSobel -

The captains came out swinging with their best stuff this morning.

Not the lineups. I'm talking about the wardrobes.

For the U.S., dark blue hats, light gray argyle sweaters over dark blue shirts and dark gray pants.

For the Internationals, white hats, white sweaters over white and black shirts and black pants.

Classy looks for both teams.
