reasons why NCLB has been a complete and utter failure.

1:38
unachieveable goals - schools can do a better job, but the goal is not simply improving, but turning out all children to have the same achievement is setting schools up for failure.
1:39
schools cannot close the gap b/c schools are a function of social and econimic conditions of the community.   educatonal research has found that the variations in achievement are impacted by greatly by socio-economic factors.
1:42
no matter how good the teaching, the curriculum, the expectations... nothing overcomes the difference of home life.   the only way to impact is to provide early education intervention.

1:43
unless we do that the achievement gap will continue to exist.
1:43
we need to address the societal issues.

1:45
there are vast socio-economic factors that impact ability to learn. health affects student acheivement.   low income children have 30% greater absences related to illness than ones with higher income levels.
1:46
if you have two groups of children who are equal in every respect (teacher, curriculum, supt., etc) and one is absent 30% more, you will not get the same level of achievement.   but if school means anything you have to be present to take advantage of it.
1:50
third big area that needs to be addressed if we are going to close the achievement gap is the kinds of after school and summer programs.

1:51
low income students spend their time outside of school with more school, intensive drill/kill programs.   middle class kids do not, they get access to high quality programs that stretch the experience for all students.
