NFL draft chat with John McClain

11:46
ChronicleSports -

Good morning and thanks for joining us. John is on his way in from pro day at the University of Houston and will begin the chat at noon.

12:01
John McClain -

Before we get started, the reason I'm late is because I spent the morning at UH's pro day watching left tackle Sebastian Vollmer and defensive end/outside linebacker Phillip Hunt as well as others. I'll have a story in Saturday's Chronicle.

Also, thanks to everyone who sent in congratulations for our 21st anniversary. I really appreciate it, and so does Carol.

At the owners meeting in California, I spoke with a lot of coaches and general managers about the draft and free agency. I'm even more pumped than before.

Oh, last week, I was chastized by a reader for sometimes giving one-word answers. I do that because it's a yes-no question, and I'm trying to answer as many as I can. Thanks ahead of time for participating.

What is the deal with the roof on Reliant Stadium? Will it be fully functioning by the season opener?
12:02
John McClain -

The roof has been fixed.

John would you consider Aaron Maybin a Terrell Suggs clone? Also if he is a clone of Suggs why wouldnt the Texans be interested in him?
12:03
John McClain -

Suggs was rated as a first-round pick, but his slow 40 time caused him to drop. He's a 3-4 OLB. Maybin weighs less than 250. He's a third-year sophomore. He's got to play OLB in a 3-4. The Texans have two starting DEs. They're not looking for another one in the first round.

After the first two rounds, this draft seems devoid of quality talent at what appears to be the Texans need defensive positions. Do you see this Regime dafting the best available athelete, even if that means drafting offensive players, or will they "reach" for defensive help? Very nice birthday message to your wife. I hope neither of you ever starts to take the other for granted. Glen

John McClain -

Thanks very much. It was our 21st anniversary. There's plenty of value for what the Texans need on defense in the third and fourth round. I now think their first five picks, which will come in the first four rounds, will be a combination of these positions: OLB, DL, FS, RB, C-G.

What is the word on where Rhett Bomar might be taken, and who might be showing some interest?
12:06
John McClain -

C.O. Brocato, who's the oldest, most experienced and best scout in the NFL, said he thinks Bomar could sneak into the second round. Others say he'll go in the third or fourth. I don't know what teams are interested in him. Sorry.

What is the latest on the signing Robinson front?
12:06
John McClain -

Nothing. They made him an offer. He declined it. They've been focused on free agency and the draft. They might come back to him before camp.

john do you see us taking malcomn jenkins.....if he falls to us..
12:07
John McClain -

Jenkins would make the Texans think long and hard because he's the top defensive back, and a team can never have enough corners.

John Welcome back. Is the deal finalized with Shaun Cody yet. Who else will the Texans bring in.
12:07
John McClain -

They finalized the deal last week -- 2 years, $3.5 million. He'll sign when he returns to town next week. I don't know their next free agent move. They're focused on the draft now.

Why is cushings stock falling so much.
12:08
John McClain -

He'll still be a first-round pick. Some scouts wonder how much better he'll get. Others say he has no natural position.

Any new developments on the free agent/draft front for the Texans?
12:08
John McClain -

Not that I know of.
