McClain's NFL combine chat

11:31
John McClain -  Okay, gang, before I get to your questions, please check out my mock draft on my blog and let me know what you think. Also, thanks to everyone who commented on my top 10 quarterbacks of all time and the fact that I left out Brett Favre.

Here's my schedule this week: At 11:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday -- including Thursday and Friday from the combine -- I'll have a one-hour chat.

I'll also have blogs from the combine as well as stories for Chron.com. Thanks ahead of time for reading.

Okay, let's get this show on the road.

11:34
John McClain -  Oh, a couple of reminders, please: Bubba's Sports Bar and Grill is having a chili cookoff Sunday to raise money to fight cerebral palsy. You can get more information by going to www.bubbasportsbarandgrill.com. Texans offensive tackle Eric Winston and 610 talk show host Matt Jackson will be among the celebrities there.

Also, on March 1-2, Bruce Matthews and Mike Munchak are co-hosting a dinner, auction and golf tournament at Kingwood to raise money for Special Olympics of Texans. They'll have a lot of current and former players with them. It's another great cause, so please check it out. For more information, go to www.spot.org.

in round 1 could Penn St DE Aaron Maybin be an option? like Cushing in your mock if he's not a defensive end he's a blitzing linebacker. the Texans can use both. thanks in advance

John McClain -  The Texans want to leave Mario on the right side. Tweeners -- college DEs who may project to OLB in the NFL -- usually play the right side because they're lighter and quicker. The Texans need a LDE. Right now, there are none worth the 15th pick. Also, in   a 4-3 you don't see many blitzing OLBs. They have to play the run, drop into coverage and rush.

[Comment From Brad]
John, are there any other guys from Texas Tech that are going to be drafted otherthen Crabtree?
11:36
John McClain -  Harrell, McBath, a FS, and one of their OL. I forgot his name. Sorry.

Any update on Dunte/Texans
11:37
John McClain -  They're negotiating. He could be franchised, but I don't think they'll do that. They'll either sign him to a long-term deal or he'll be gone. I'm hearing he wants the $23 mil that Chris Gamble was guaranteed and they're offering in the neighborhood of $18 or $19. Andre Johnson got $15 two years ago. Mario got $26.3, I believe. Either way, Dunta will get the second-most guaranteed money in franchise history if he re-signs.

So,what will the Texans do next yr? Will Schaub be all world? Will Slaton be Super Stud? Will the D step up more? Inquiring minds(Intelligent Minds) want to know.
11:38
John McClain -  Schaub was a better quarterback after his knee injury last season than I thought he would be. He was damn good. Slaton should get better. The running game should be improved with a young, hungry, durable back to take some of the load off Slaton. The defense should be better under Bush.
