Portland's startup scene

12:01
Mike Rogoway -
Thanks, folks, for stopping in. A lot of feedback came in after that Saturday article looking local startup activity. In general, it falls into three categories:

* Portland startups are lame. Social media is lame. These businesses aren’t really businesses, and aren’t going anywhere.

* “Portland’s got talent,” and its entrepreneurs are at the crest of the next wave of technology.

* Oregon has a lot of high-tech companies that don’t play in the social media space, and aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

My hope this afternoon is to get more perspectives aired on the state of high-tech entrepreneurship – what’s driving things, and what inhibits activity? And what’s next?

What are your thoughts?

I think the naysayers thoughts of everything Portland being "lame" shows shortsightedness & blind ignorance personally.

It appears that a lot of folks mix up the concepts of starting a cool web site and building a business that will create jobs and revenue

Portland lacks the drive that Silicon Valley start-ups do, we're too 9-5 and don't have the hunger to burn the midnight oil, it is claimed

Does entpreneurship need to change to accomodate Portland, or is it the other way around?

Mike Rogoway -  Yeah, Chrisit's sort of -- any club that would have me as a member isn't worth joining. Portland's got a lot of that.

Mike -- I'd like your thoughts on the third point -- why don't any companies that don't do "social media" or "mobile apps" get press?

NB: I disagree, we have the drive & a lot of Silicon Valley rockstars started here.

How would Portland change to accommodate entrepreneurship, Pete?
