Northwestern Football vs. Miami of Ohio

10:46
Chris Rowe -  This is Chris Rowe, liveblogging for you today from Ryan Field.  Today, the 'Cats take on the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, who are looking for their first win of the season.
11:03
Chris Rowe -  The 'Cats start with the ball at their own 34 yard line after a solid return by Jeravin Matthews.  We'll see if Mike Kafka and the offense can pick up an early lead.
11:10
Chris Rowe -  Stefan Demos gives the 'Cats a 3-0 lead with a 46-yard field goal.  Demos continues his success this season, improving to 9 for 9 on field goals.  Kafka kept the drive going with a 23-yard completion on 3rd and 10, but back-to-back incompletions ended the drive there.
11:14
Chris Rowe -  The 'Cats defense forces a three and out on Miami's first drive after a David Arnold sack on first down.  Defensive lineman Corey Wootton did not start because of a sprained ankle, but the defense looked sharp without him. The offense starts their second drive on the 27 yard line.
11:18
Chris Rowe -

The Miami defense returns the favor, holding the 'Cats to three plays on that drive.  The 'Cats offense looks a little sluggish early on against a weak Miami defense.

11:26
Chris Rowe -  Nate Williams intercepts a 4th down pass from Miami QB Zac Dysert to end the RedHawks' drive at the 'Cats 27 yard line.  Brad Philips came up with a big sack on 3rd down to push Miami out of field goal range.
11:36
Josh Sim -  Hello to you all, Josh Sim also coming to you from Ryan Field press box. A 10-play drive results in a 6 yard touchdown run by QB Mike Kafka. The offense is finally coming alive, as the defense can only force the NU offense to one third-down.
11:37
Josh Sim -  At the end of the first quarter, it's all Northwestern, leading 10-0. The offense is looking sharp and the defense is dominating.
11:44
Chris Rowe -  The 'Cats defense forces another three and out, coming up with their third sack of the game in the process.  The offense goes back to work in Miami territory after a nice return by Brendan Smith.
11:49
Josh Sim -  Three running backs rush the ball in a 4 play drive that results in 40-yard field goal attempt. Miami (OH) blocks the attempted field goal by Stefan Demos. The running game is still suspect, but the 'Cats still have the momentum.
12:04
Chris Rowe -

Miami punts and pins the 'Cats at the one yard line.  The 'Cats had the RedHawks stopped early in the last drive, but a personal foul extended the drive and shifted field position in Miami's favor.

12:08
Josh Sim -  Northwestern's defense continues to dominate both in coverage and the line of the scrimmage. After a quick three-and-out by Northwestern, the defense rises up, culminating in a sack by LB Quentin Davie brings up a punting situation, which PR Brendan Smith takes to the 31-yard line.
12:17
Chris Rowe -  The offense fails to convert on 4th and 1, giving the ball back to Miami.  The offense has struggled in the second quarter, advancing into Miami territory twice but failing to score both times.
12:24
Josh Sim -  The final drive of the first half is marred by penalties on both sides and lapses in pass coverage. Poor clock management leaves Miami (OH) scoreless, and the score remains at 10-0, Wildcats, heading into halftime.
12:32
Josh Sim -  Although the offense still could use some reworking, the story for the game thus far is the dominance of the defense, despite being without the services of DE Corey Wootton. Tackling has vastly improved, including some impressive big-hit plays that resemble the strength of last year's defensive unit.
12:45
Chris Rowe -  We're back for the start of the second half.  Miami starts with the ball on the 34 yard line.
12:49
Chris Rowe -

The Miami offense passes midfield, but on the third play of the drive, safety Brian Peters intercepts Dysert's pass.  The turnover is the 'Cats second of the game and their eighth in the past two games.  The offense starts their first drive of the half with favorable field position.

12:53
Chris Rowe -

The 'Cats offense gives the ball right back after driving into Miami territory.  Kafka took a shot at the endzone and had the ball intercepted at the one yard line, where Miami will start their next drive.

12:59
Josh Sim -  The NU defense continues to live up to its expectations, holding the RedHawks to a short field and forcing a punt that puts NU at the 39-yard line in Miami (OH) territory.
1:07
Chris Rowe -  Despite excellent starting field position at the Miami 39 yard line, the 'Cats offense failed to widen its lead, moving backwards to their own 47 yard line.  It's been a rough day for the offense against a Miami defense that has allowed over 40 points per game this season.  The return of Stephen Simmons has been little help to the 'Cats running game, which is averaging under 3 yards per carry today.
