ITSC09 session 1 Leadership stream

10:54
Vision for 1:1 programs
based on Ringwood SC
Michael Phillips
background - Leading schools fund allowed the development of a different approach to teaching and learning
Looked at developing changing ways for students to work with teachers
although RSC was quite good, still needed to raise the bar.
looked at assisting to build teacher capacity, not necessarily in outsourced PD, predominantly at school PD
looked to create different and dynamic learning environments
2009 schools are all about the students and developing an environment which supports it

10:55
1973 - 2009 students paths have changed from guided pathway to tumultuous wave of skills knowledge. things have changed a lot
11:00
1:1 technology, vision to bring student learning environments to support learning

Quality PD a must
sandpit time, collaboration

transforms how curriculum is delivered, make it more engaging and exciting, promoting deeper knowledge

Interesting to se on the video how often the teacher is still standing at the board at the front of the classroom, even though it's an IWB :)

11:06
Initially went with dell, as a cost factor in 2006
most teachers used macbooks
some had IBM and students had dells
in 2007 they went with Apple, even though it was more costly, decision based on the ease of use to create the information

Discussion - makes it easy when the staff are already converts to mac use.
it's not an option, all teachers must have a notebook of one kind

identify those who don't want to change, use of ICT peer coaches to build confidence with those staff targeted
11:08
creating digital learning environments - staff must use and create digital resources, makes it hard for them to not be a part of the shift.
looking at ways to work differently, to make it easier for change
11:08
space is a factor, but can be worked around
11:11
community was surveyed before they went 1:1
85% of cohort said yes and would support a 24/7 model
85% of students have the computers - leased
others book in - book out daily

lease arrangement - students have to look after them in most cases. Kids can reimage
laptop coordinator - technician
specialist tech and trainee
not labour intensive

licensing covered under department

11:15
leased computers are the students at the end of lease cycle
parents pay once a year

now self funded with cash flow - initially funded with finance company
students who don't support it the comps are owned by college at end of lease cycle

every kid in 9 - 11 has a computer or access to computers

11:17
mobile devices such as ipod touches etc provided as class sets,
one comment was to bundle with macbook

netbook has potential to fill the gap in 7/8

year 12 they should "own" their own machine, and able to continue on with it for their final year.
Longer term vision - seamless use of tech across the college

11:29
focus on 9 - 11 to assist with engaging students. security not an issue, as they all have one

11:33
break out to brainstorming session - what are the 5 key point to enable a change in approach
11:41
Cathy and I saw a few things as relevant -
  • infrastructure reliability
  • building teacher capacity
  • changing beliefs and practices
Table feedback -
Leadership has to be a focus to show by example.
free up time for play
 Create buy in
it has to be able to work - success builds on success
11:47
positive leadership is essential to develop
ICT goals in Performance plans
discuss visions with tech support team

IP - staff not ready to share with the world, intellectual property, sharing online
11:50
changing mindset to use the online tools and sharing
11:54
1:1 program opens up the learning styles
curriculum needs to be modified, where does that time come from?
everything comes back to leadership

mid Nov - dec time used to provide PD to staff
flexible and creative use of time, with space and time to play to embed learning.
11:56
tech support for the program - one tech available at all times. accountability with acceptable use policy etc

storage of the stay at school comps - racks where they are plugged in to charge overnight, more robust than the trolley set up.

11:59
school website support - portal, needs to be developed and strengthened
use of nings to develop classroom programs online
teachers using them for more as effective learning spaces - virtual

12:00
A whole new mind - whole minded approach
1;1 is a way to encourage creative thinking across the school

12:01
Apple classrooms of tomorrow model
students at the centre of the process, need to include staff PD
12:02
need to guide our young people in working their way through an online world. socially ethically
