PSU preseason chat

8:02
Frank Bodani -  Hi everyone... My name is Frank Bodani and I'm the Penn State football beat writer here at the York Daily Record. Welcome to our  first Penn State  chat. The season is less than three weeks away and coming fast.

Glad to talk about Mike Mauti and Joe Paterno and Daryll Clark and whatever other Penn State football topics that hit home.

Do you think the OL will be serviceable by the Big10 opener?
8:04
Frank Bodani -  It will be good enough, as long as Dennis Landolt and Wisniewski stay healthy. Guards are up in the air but the key here for late September is "good enough."

How good do you think Clark has to potential to be this season?
8:09
Frank Bodani -

Clark is mentioned in early Heisman Trophy talk, and he should be. One of the best in the country last year in total touchdowns, throwing and running, so that's a good start.

He's smart, has great leadership skills and only figures to be better under fire this fall. He makes people around him better. No reason why the Heisman talk shouldn't at least hang around as long as he stays healthy.

So what does it mean for PSU now that Mauti is out?
8:11
Frank Bodani -

It means that one of the best young linebackers in the nation will have to wait another year to show his stuff. It's a big loss, if only just to see how good Mauti could be this early. But the Nits can withstand it at linebacker.

Figure, for sure, on starters Sean Lee and Navorro Bowman on the outside and Josh Hull in the middle. More time now for Nate Stupar and Bani Gbadyu.

Have you seen someone like him rise so quickly to stardom? Like you said, Heisman talk and the cover of SI? He seemed to come out of nowhere last year...
8:14
Frank Bodani -  Remember, though, that Daryll went to prep school and then was a backup for two more years at Penn State. Coaches knew how good he could be ... and we probably would have seen it a year earlier if Joe wouldn't have been stuck on Anthony Morelli the entire 2007 season.

But your point is well taken. Most never produce so much as a first-time starter.

How much do you see Royster being utilized similar to DWill this season? Royster thinks he may be moved all over the place like Williams to get mismatches which also allows Green and maybe Beechum more chances.
