Jordan Breen Chat

Jordan Breen -  Want to thank everyone for peeping the second go-around for our live chat. Today's chat is dedicated the memories of both Billy Mays and Alexis Arguello, pound-for-pound legends in their respective fields.

Make sure to peep the new twitter account, twitter.com/jordanbreen.

Let's rock, heads.

Now that it seems unlikely that Dana’s prediction from earlier this year that New York will see a UFC event by the beginning of next year is unlikely to be realized, has there been any progress on his other big prediction, namely seeing the UFC in Toronto by year's end?
3:07
Jordan Breen -  Not really. It's going to be a massive uphill battle in Toronto, and Zuffa will have to really put a serious squeeze play together to make things work with the Ontario Athletic Commission. The OAC head, Ken Hayashi, is a nightmare bureaucrat of the highest order. I strongly encourage everyone -- but especially Canadian MMA fans -- to google about his exploits. In addition to oppressing MMA, he's also nearly killed boxing in Ontario, as well.

Which bout will be "Fight of the Night" at UFC 100?
3:08
Jordan Breen -  If it has staying power, I'd lean to St. Pierre-Alves. However, if the marquee fights are relatively cut and dry, it'll likely end up being something like Grice-Gugerty or Miller-Danzig.

Do you think that Alan Belcher will ever be a true contender? He is still 25, is the sky the limit for this kid?
3:09
Jordan Breen -  It's tough to say. Belcher has a lot of talent (hence the nickname), but he may not ever be particularly steady. I have doubts about his ability to recover from firepower during fights. Day pretty much overwhelmed him by throwing haymakers at him, and once Grove landed flush on him, the wheels came off. He can pull it out if guys try to lay on him, like the Santiago and Kang fights, but if he's hurt, he's pretty much done.

Do you see Yoshihiro Akiyama making any waves in the UFC?
3:11
Jordan Breen -  Much of it depends on matchmaking. 185 isn't a super deep weight class, and there is ways -- as Patrick Cote showed -- to backdoor your way into a title shot. I would say the Belcher fight will tell us a lot in terms of where he's at physically and how he stacks up with a talented B+ guy in that division.

How do you feel about the news of a Cro-Cop return and who would you pit him against first?
3:13
Jordan Breen -  For those who didn't see, Fighters Only have a story up about Zuffa making Cro Cop an "offer he can't refuse". Naturally, we'll stay on top of the story.

I think there's two ways to go. Cro Cop likes staying active, so putting him in with a solid B-level opponent as soon as possible, maybe the UFC 103 card, would work. However, if Cro Cop is comfortable waiting and they want a marquee fight, the winner of Couture-Nogueira could fit the bill.

Is Lesnar's standup underrated and Frank Mir's overrated ?
3:15
Jordan Breen -  Sort of and sort of. Lesnar's stand-up is incredibly basic right now, but he throws striaght, he throws hard, and people don't realize how insane his reach is. Rewatch the Couture fight, and it's clear Couture really hadn't paid mind to how long Brock's punches are.

As for Mir, he's not horrible by any stretch, but I think people make too much of the Nogueira fight in which he threw the same basic strikes over and over again, and Nogueira offered nothing. Mir has power, and can throw a variety of strikes, but his combinations are basic and his footwork is poor.

I actually have two questions. 1)Do you think that Alexis Arguello was the prototype for Manny Pacquiao? 2)I understand the huge differences between boxing and MMA weight classes but do you think there is an MMA equivalent?
3:17
Jordan Breen -  No. Pacquiao's style is much faster, and his combination punching is much deeper than Arguello's ever was. Plus, both have vastly different body types, and their styles reflect it.

Not sure how you mean the second question, but just in case this is a question hinting at changing MMA's weight classes, they're fine the way they are.

If you could replace a main-card bout with a prelim at 100, what would it be?
3:18
Jordan Breen -  I don't think I would, honestly, but if I had to, I'd swap Fitch-Thiago out for Kim-Grant, Danzig-Miller, or even Jones-O'Brien. I'd rather see how those unfold live, whereas I feel we pretty much know what we're getting out of Fitch-Thiago.

[Comment From Jeff from Sorth Carolina ]
Do you see any real positive change coming from all the discussion lately of scoring systems and judging training, or are we truly stuck with the 10 point-must system with little use of the 10-10 and poorly trained judges for eternity? I'd like to believe we can make progress, but the system seems too entrenched and bureaucratic to evolve in a major fashion.
3:20
Jordan Breen -  Well, things can't get worse, honestly. I think the use of the 10-10 the way I advocate it is the sort of idea that has to be external -- that's why I spend so much time blabbering about it. ACs are never going to sit their guys down and give them a seminar on why it makes so much sense to use them liberally.

I do think it will improve though. Also, your state just regulated the sport and has its first ammy event coming up next month. Get on the ball, and get licensed to ref and judge in South Carolina.
