Restaurant chat with critic Devra First

- Hello everyone. I'm trying to make a cup of coffee while I talk to you. If I suddenly go silent, it's because I've knocked it onto my computer.

- Over at the Washington Post, food editor Joe Yonan writes
this ode
to the simple ceramic dripper.

Devra First
- That's really the only method of coffee making I've ever used, unless I'm brewing for a crowd. (I had a brief flirtation with Italian stove-top espresso pots, but it was brief, I assure you.) How do you make coffee?

Hello! Are there any new, cool restaurants in the Davis Sq or Harvard Sq areas?
11:05
Devra First
- In Harvard Square, there's Tory Row, from the guys behind Audubon Circle, Middlesex, and Miracle of Science.

- In Davis, there's Boston Burger Company, which I haven't tried yet. I'm intrigued by The King burger, which comes with peanut butter, bacon, and fried bananas. That has to be horrible, right? Or does it?

There have been plenty of new restaurants in Boston over the years. Can you give us some of the older ones that are still your favorites?

- I like Green Street, No. 9 Park, and Oleana. I had a fantastic meal at Clio recently that made me very happy. How about you?

Hi Devra -- there's a number of food-related blogs I skim every day or two (including Dishing!) -- do you have any particular favorites?
11:11
Devra First
- Hello, Guy. Thanks for reading Dishing! Some I like: Serious Eats, Smitten Kitchen, Chocolate & Zucchini, the Atlantic Food Channel, Food on the Food, David Lebovitz's site. Which ones do you like?

- Increasingly, I'm finding Twitter -- which at first I felt to be shallowness incarnate -- one great big food blog. Following some of the many people whose thinking on food I find interesting, I get a great big-picture view of what's going on.

Serious Eats (and the spin-offs are great), and I also particularly like Michael Ruhlman's blog (and his books) -- it has really helped me open my eyes.

- Yes, I should have mentioned that! Have you seen his new book, "Ratio"? It's incredibly useful, offering the ratios behind great recipes. Knowing the proportions, you can size them up or down and tailor them with whatever ingredients you want.

When did the globe start putting the food section in the G magazine.. I miss opening to the full food section every Wednesday morning. how does everyone else feel about this??
11:15
Devra First
- It's been a while now -- yes, discuss. I'm gathering everyone would rather have a full food section.

Hi Devra! OK, I've got one for you: The best raviolis in the city? Thanks!
11:17
Devra First
- Oh, wow. Ravioli. Can I speak to stuffed pasta in general? I really love the offerings at Bina. Sage is another that comes to mind. DePasquale's Homemade Pasta Shop just opened in the North End, and I'm quite curious to check out their offerings. Anyone been?

I miss the full page fold out of the old food pages.

"Ratio" is sitting in my online shopping cart, waiting for the rest of the order :) -- I also like the blog "Tigers and Strawberries" by Barbara Fisher. She has many interesting-looking pan-asian recipes.

I had an amazing meal at Oleana the other day which just confirmed it as my favorite restaurant around. Had the chefs tasting menu. which by the way had its prices reduced. The now 5 course tasting is 54 and the vegetarian tasting menu is 36. Also beyond the amazing food make sure you try the oleana 3-c's beer made by cisco!
