Talk movies with Ty Burr

1:01
Ty Burr -  Hi hi everyone -- or whoever is out there. TB here to talk movies.
1:01
Ty Burr -  Let us pray the chat software doesn't go HAL 9000 and seize up on me again.
1:01
Ty Burr -  Send in your questions, comments, metaphysical observations and I'll field them as best I can.
1:02
Ty Burr -  First up, from the estimable rubi-kun...

[Comment From rubi-kun]
Half Blood Prince: early reviews say it's the best HP movie yet. Really? Even better than the Cuaron one?
1:02
Ty Burr -  Truth? I'm avoiding reading the early reviews, since I'll be seeing the movie first thing Monday morning and don't want to be swayed.
1:03
Ty Burr -  I will say, though, that the mega-hype surrounding these extremely popular tentpole franchises can get in the way of a person's (or a media culture's) judgement.
1:04
Ty Burr -  Which is to say that we're gonna need at least five years after the last two-part "Potter" movie before we can see how these movies really stack up.

[Comment From General Washington]
In light of McNamara's passing, is "Fog of War" the best political movie ever? Is it even a 'political' movie? My vote goes to "Secret Honor" by Altman.
1:05
Ty Burr -  Interesting question, General. "Fog of War" is in a way about the perils of politics -- about looking back and seeing what you missed in the heat of battle. Greatest political movie? Something in me still says "Dr. Strangelove."
1:06
Ty Burr -  Or Altman's "Tanner 88" miniseries.

I know you were disappointed by both, but what's more worth seeing: Bruno or Public Enemies? I'm edging towards Bruno just for the sake of being able to say something about the controversy

So "Bruno" is not so good, eh? Even worth seeing?
1:07
Ty Burr -  I know a lot of people who are going to see "Bruno" if only because they loved "Borat" so much, and that's fine. There are some real bellylaughs there, for sure, but the movie leaves with a sour feeling.
1:08
Ty Burr -  As for "Public ZEnemies," I feel how I feel but the movie certainly has its fans (though I'm still trying to parse that NY Times rave). And Depp is just great, as usual. If I had to choose, I'd say go with "Enemies."
1:08
Ty Burr -  But, yes, "Bruno" will be more of a water-cooler topic next week.

[Comment From Jack]
Any on the new criteron edition of friends of eddie coyle, does it represtn boston well?
1:09
Ty Burr -  Hey jack -- "Eddie Coyle" represents an older, vanished Boston really well -- a pre-Whitey Bulger criminal underground, without the star power. It's slow by today's standards, but that a viewer's prohblem, not the movies. And Mitchum is magnificent.
1:10
Ty Burr -  I'm of a mind that this and "Gone, Baby, Gone" are, to date, the two movies that have got this city -- or a particular slice of this city -- right.

What do you think is next for Sacha Baron Cohen after Bruno?
