The Road to 1:1

1:00
Neil Carmona-Vickery
Director of eLearning
Balwyn High School
1:01
coordinates 1:1 program, eLearning and PD of staff
began at RSC
has done a lot of research into the trends related to 1:1 programs
1:04
initially no framework, structure or common language as to how staff could implement eLearning, no connections between school
Explained the faces of eLearning
Teacher PD
Curriculum, assessment and reporting
information technologies, resources, student services
work needs to be disseminated among many
1:09
refers to handouts -
what do you wish to achieve with a one to one program

discussions - number of eLearning leaders, and APs
some schools already have 1:1
others are here to see if it is right for their school

access is one reason for promoting 1;1

1:10
damage on school based computers  is ridiculous, perhaps ownership would get rid of some of the damage

1:12
Macs seem to have less damage, because they are more useable
1:13
trust that it is used appropriately with a Mac seems to work
1:13
school goals need to fit into effective schools model
1:17
Trends
what trends have captured your attention, thinking about 1:1

creating content
smaller devices - how do schools work with this
generational divide,
1:20
making sense of these developments

sit and wait to see what is developing with different devices available
PC > laptops>netbooks>mobile devices> where to next

students should have access to the most creative device possible eg: macbook from primary, towards  year 9 mobile device, netbook or robust unit for more senior years
1:22
Stephen Heppel
Me We See
approach

my thoughts - the ipod touches would be awesome for 3C9 program with the "we"
  • capture and connect
  • always with you
  • socially mobile

1:27
other tools are needed
eg: clickview, digilearn,  data probs, IWB,

IWB needs a focus - year level, subject area etc.

eBooks
developments in the wind to support many more in production, including ebooks to support national curriculum
1:31
challenges - when everyone is using it, it becomes less special ;)
1:43
debate on motions

Motion 1: This house believes that parents should pay for 1:1 tech that students use at school
Yes - sense of ownership and care, parents will support this
parents already buy other resources students used, this is just another resource
community acceptance of shift to digital learning
frees up the schools budget for other support at the school
No: (prefaced, with don't really agree with it)
can't all afford it, unequal access
handwriting
where is the evidence that it actually improves learning outcomes
money could be better spent
parents already buy enough
1:44
Motion: Teachers are ill equipped to teach using online tools and resources
YES: Time, access, PD support, teachers still believe they are
NEG: (don't really agree with it - doesn't really happen ) train the trainer, authentic learning, all digital natives, and they are used to using the online tools embedding skills
1:52
Motion - Leadership teams understand the learning needs and interest of teachers
Positive:
  • focus on the needs,
  • remember what it was like to be a teacher

Negative:
  • higher above leaders have different agenda
  • out of touch
  • lack of consultation
  • lack of support for learning needs
1:55
Concerns
  • elearning approaches can become over saturated
  • are students we have really digital natives, little skill transfer
  • infrastructure, reliability
  • are staff ready for change in pedagogy
  • end of secondary assessment doesn't really reflect digital learning shift, as mentioned by keynote earlier
  • kids don't want us in their space - facebook etc
1:58
two types of devices need to be in school
personal - parent owned or leased, serviced by school, tasks provided for 90%, necessity, expected

Specialist - school owned or leased - like Media or photography programsserviced by school, 10% of tasks, only some areas will have it
2:01

E5 engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate

boring teaching practices are not improved with access to technology

2:04
Professional development
improving teacher capabilities so no TEACHER is left behind
Effective professional learning
staff meeting times should be put together by person in charge of prof. learning
