Good Morning

[Comment From Bob McGwier]
How can we solve insurgency in eastern Afghanistan without dealing with sanctuaries in Pakistan. NOTHING is reported about western Pakistan (as if it doesn't exist) but bordering Iran, there is plenty of opportunity for trouble. Pleaes comment on that.
8:50
Dan Rather -  With great difficulty, if at all. US and NATO military indicate they are going to begin reemphasizing trying to solve this great problem. As for reporting, very difficult to get into much less operate in this area. We'll keep trying. Thx

[Comment From Airean]
It appears that the Afgan andf Pakistani governments do not listen to us, who do they listen to?
8:53
Dan Rather -  They do listen, at least to some extent , in Afghanistan. THEIR complaint is that WE don't listen enough to THEM. Pakistan, frankly, is so split and fractured...with the government in constant tension with military and intelligence agencies...that efforts to have meaningful dialouge with them is basically a dialouge of the deaf. Amb Holbrooke is trying. Tough job.

[Comment From Brenda Sargent]
What would be your definition of "winning" in Afgan or Pakistan?
8:56
Dan Rather -  Keeping the most violent element of radical Islam..the Taliban and Al Quida..from being able to effectively reform and do the kinds of things they did on 9/ll...plus bring at least some meaningful security and stability to the mass of people, under a representative government.
