Will the Cowboys win the beast?
1:48
Tim Cowlishaw -  Glad to be chatting, I had opened up my own chat and no one in the room. Par for the course. Now I think I'm where I am supposed to be. Do I pick the Cowboys to win the East? Not yet. Still want to see how they are playing in December. But it's much more doable now that the Giants have folded, tanked, gotten old, whatever it is that's happened in the Meadowlands.

[Comment From Randy]
When Phillips told the story of Ratliff "getting in his face" and accepting blame for the Eagles success in the running game, the coach tried to deflect the blame. I find it remarkable that his players are more willing to accept blame than he is to challenge them to do better.

Tim Cowlishaw -  I don't think that was the point of that story, Randy. I think Wade tries to encourage   players, not discourage them. He is the anti-Parcells. We have seen how that works at times and we have certainly seen how it doesn't. But with Ratliff, I don't think he's a player anyone needs to ride.  He's a big difference maker on this team and had a great game Sunday night.

I dont trust Wade Phillips. Somebody turned this team around. Who was it?
1:51
Tim Cowlishaw -  I don't trust him either, Paul, so let's pick someone else. Tony Romo? Probably not although his play has improved. I think you look at the defensive leaders on the field -- Ware, Ratliff, Brooking a big difference maker. It starts there. But in reality Wade is going to have to get credit too, if this thing keep getting better.

[Comment From Clavin]
How good can the mavericks be? Can they compete for the West with their improved defense and what looks to be a potent top 5?
1:54
Tim Cowlishaw -  Yes, Clavin, they can. I thought this team would be a little better this season. Sitting there opening night watching them lose to the Wizards I wondered what I was seeing. But a team with Shawn Marion and eventually Drew Gooden playing  roles is better than a team with Brandon Bass or Antoine Wright playing roles.  And I hate to say it but Dampier is playing for a contract. We've seen the Mavs fooled by that before but if he can just do what he can do, it makes them a better team. And the West has a bunch of lousy teams in it.   Memphis,  Golden State, Sacramento, Minnesota -- you can pile up a bunch of wins against those teams.
