Neal Walker, Sky News -

Welcome to our live and breaking analysis of the Commons Speaker's statement. I'm Neal, although my display name will become 'The Speaker' when Michael Martin gets on his feet. Our Political Correspondent Joey Jones is on hand to analyse the Speaker's statement for us.

[Comment From Joey Jones]
Hello everyone, busy day! - Looking forward to trying to give a little bit of running commentary on Michael Martin's last hurrah.
3:26
Joey Jones -  Jon Craig has been in the members' lobby - apparently many of the MPs there are betting on Sir George Young to take over. I must say I fear he would look from the outside as an establishment candidate. Now Jon is saying Ann Widdecombe might be an interim speaker. Intriguing!

Neal Walker, Sky News -

The Speaker is on his feet

3:34
Joey Jones -  Looks like a single sheet of paper.
3:34
Neal Walker, Sky News -  I will relinquish position of Speaker on Sunday 21st June
3:34
Joey Jones -  Blimey that was short.
3:35
Neal Walker, Sky News -  Very! Would you have expected more of an explanation of his position Joey?
3:35
Joey Jones -  That was not the emotional sendoff we had been expecting! (To say the least).
3:37
Joey Jones -  I had thought there would be a bit more meat. Maybe Michael Martin thought it was best to be straightforward and businesslike given that he's got himself into trouble over recent weeks when his emotions have got the better of him.

[Comment From Jim Stephenson]
Just typical from Martin, no explanation of his actions, no real apology!! A joke

[Comment From Neil]
I think we need an instant replay of that

[Comment From Phil Mosely]
The man is arrogant, he took non of the blame for the debacle and when he decided to step down he could not be bothered to explain anything - he is everything that is wrong with politics. They have lost touch with the voters and the people.
3:39
Joey Jones -  Yes Neil.... maybe it would be more emotional in slow motion!
3:39
[Comment From Tim]
Do you feel MM has been made a scape goat to take focus off some of the key offenders? Yes he has been known to allow himself to get wrapped in his own emotion, but an extreme reaction?
3:40
[Comment From Dave Hough]
Why wait until 21st June ?. Is there more to this?.
3:40
Joey Jones -  I suspect some of the commenters may be onto something.... had Martin spoken further, he might have slipped once again into self-justification. It's been his default mode of communication just recently.
