Pharber -

This will be an interesting match-up.

People in Abington probably don’t know much about West Boylston, but they are a good team – you have to be a good team to get this far.

Last year West Boylston made it to the Central finals with a perfect 20-0 record only to lose to Hopedale.

This year West Boylston went 20-0 in the regular season and won their first two playoff games, 17-0 over Hudson Catholic and 15-1 over Murdock High.

Then they met Hopedale in the Central Mass Championship and beat them, 5-4, for the title.

Then they made it to this game by beating St. Mary’s 11-4.

Their pitching and defense is solid, too. They allowed only 32 runs in 20 regular season games.

Their best pitchers are Ryan Milweski and Ryan McKernan. Their catcher, Shane Sampson is their closer. He has regularly come into to finish off games. McKernan missed about six weeks this season with elbow problems.

They are a good hitting team. West Boylston scored 10 or more runs in 12 games this year and scored 15 or more five times. Six of their starters are hitting over .400.

Mike Cleary, Stephan Fisher, Mike Pusateri, Shane Sampson and Jeremy Phelps know how to swing the bat.

Beating Hopedale made their season. West Boylston coach Todd Smith said the pressure is off after beating their archrivals for the Central title. “It was kind of like our goal and now it’s just house money. We’re going out and having a lot of fun playing baseball.”

Abington is very similar. They only lost one player from last year’s team and they know how to handle the pressure.

What Abington needs, though, is a solid performance from their starting pitcher Steve Perakslis.

He has been perfect in the playoffs. He is 2-0 with a save and a 0.00 earned run average. He pitched last Saturday and came in on Thursday and pitched two innings. He just needs to pitch another seven today.

“When Steve is on the mound, it takes a lot of pressure off of everybody,” his father, Steve, Sr., the Abington coach said. “When you only have to score three or four runs to win a game, it makes it easier to play relaxed.

“Steve is probably one of the most intense baseball players I’ve ever been around,”

Overall this season the younger Perakslis is 10-0. He will attend the University of Maine in the fall on a full scholarship to play baseball.

Pharber -  They had a moment of silence for Jack Riley, the former Abington athletic direction and huge supporter of the athletic program at the school.

Abington is the visiting team and West Boylston is the home team for this contest.

Pharber -  Just like the MIAA, 19 minutes past the designated starting time and nobody is on the field. Need to sell more hot dogs I guess. (Oh, they are pretty good, too!). Great weather, a few clouds in the sky.
C'mon guys, let's get it on!
