What are your favorite dog breeds for homes with small children?
1:00
Andrea Arden -  There are some breeds which are very often tolerant of children (and their often over exuberant play!), such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Border Terriers and English Cockers. But, keep in mind that there are a broad range of temperaments within each breed. So, it is important to 'road test' adult   dogs of the type you are interested in by visiting your local shelter, rescue group or good breeders.

Andrea Arden -  And of course, my absolute favorite type of dog is the All American Mixed Breed! :)

How long does it typically take to train a dog in terms of going to the bathroom outside?

Andrea Arden -  Unfortunately, most people are in a big (understandable) rush to get their dogs housetrained. But, while your dog can certainly start to get the idea of where to go in a few days, I think generally for a dog to be truly housetrained (i.e. he/she knows reliably to go in your specified spot) it takes a good 6-12 months. That means you should carefully manage their time (on leash supervision indoors and crate or long term area confinement when you can't watch them) until you are confident they get the idea.

Our German Shepherd, who will be one next month, still does submissive urination. We've tried ignoring him for a while when we enter the room, but it doesn't seem to work. He just waits to pee until we pay him some (very calm) attention. Any suggestions.

Andrea Arden -  I have what I am sure will be a sure fire solution!...For the next month have a treat pouch on your hip whenever possible with some of your dog's healthy food/treats in it (I like Wellness dry kibble) so you can reach in and toss down 3-4 pieces on the ground as you walk by your dog. It won't take him long to get that your entry means hunt for food. You can eventually get down to one piece and then none.

Hi, I have a whippet. We have been feeding him a high protein grain free diet (wellness core ocean) and I have heard how great it is and also that some people disagree with it. What is your take on feeding dogs grain free food?
