Battle between Mayor Nagin and the City Council

11:13
Suzanne Terrell -  The problems arising between the Council and Mayor are causing the public to lose confidence and question whether we can recover.
11:14
Jeff Crouere -

How did it get this bad? What can be done to improve relations?

11:16
Suzanne Terrell -  The council needs some very strong leadership to deal with the Mayor. He seems to be steering this ship all alone- or on his own terms
11:16
[Comment From jim]
is Nagin the worst mayor in the history of new orleans
11:16
Jeff Crouere -

Jim,

If he is not the worst mayor, he certainly is one of the worst.

11:17
Suzanne Terrell -

TheI think this is beyond retreats and feel good measures. The mayor seems to have hunkered down on his positions...I am unsure who his advisors are. Some would say that this is the reason a business types best step into politics isn't at the top

11:17
[Comment From jim]
He doesn't seem to care about the public or anyone else. It is all about maintaining his power. It is pure arrogance.
11:18
[Comment From Karen]
The Mayor takes his advice from no one. There is more than meets the eye here.
11:18
Suzanne Terrell -

But are some ways to limit his power and override his veto but, the council is not taking a strong stand as a group or even a majority.

11:18
Jeff Crouere -  I am really concerned about an administration that destroys records.

Suzie, what can the council do? take him to court?
11:19
[Comment From jim]
it is about time for the council to get tough with this fool

[Comment From michelle]
council had the opportunity to take the mayor to court, but they backed down.
11:20
Suzanne Terrell -

There have been some excellent City Attorneys who can offer advice to the Council. The Charter was amended in '94 but the basic mayor-council balance is basically the same- hire one of these fellows (Anzelmo, Hoffman, Russel) each of them knows how the mayor's perogative works- they should take him to court

11:20
[Comment From Carrollton]
The Mayor did not destroy the records, they are bluffing.
11:21
[Comment From Bayou Perspective]
Most of it stems from a war with the SBC, as he thinks that they are out to get him, just ask Gregory Rusovich
11:21
[Comment From Guest]
This man should have gone down after his Katrina behavior. I think he was even more empowered by his reelection and feels "bullet proof" to his power and behavioe.
11:22
[Comment From Bayou Perspective]
He can tell you all about it....he thinks they are out to get him...so...he just throws out any and all proposals they have to make the city better...
11:22
Jeff Crouere -  The other disturbing issue involves the review committees. Mayor Nagin wants to shield this from the public, but doesn't the public pay his salary?  Doesn't he have an obligation to inform the public who is getting these lucrative contracts?
11:23
Jeff Crouere -  Nagin is obviously insulated and does not have any professional advice. No one of any competence could be advising him to act in this manner.
11:23
[Comment From michelle]
the administration doesn't post all contracts to the city's website as required by law.
