Matt Wilansky -

Hockey junkies, welcome to our Thursday game of the week. Scott Burnside, Pierre LeBrun, EJ Hradek and special guest Chris Johnston of the Canadian Press will join us soon. But feel free to begin submitting your comments and questions.

Scott Burnside -  Hey, all, we are truly live tonight as I'm at Philips Arena in lovely downtown Atlanta   waiting for the start of the Thrashers/Bruins tilt. Welcome.

How bad will Ryan Smith's injury affect the Kings ?
6:47
Chris Johnston -  Good evening all, thanks for letting an outsider in. Scotty, how's the atmosphere at Philips?
6:48
Scott Burnside -

Robert; I think Smyth's injury hurts in two ways; production-wise, of course. He was off to a great start averaging a point a game; but he is has become an important part of the team's chemistry and I think the young guys, especially Kopitar, look up to Smyth. Or as our good friend Pierre LeBrun likes to call him; Captain Canada.

6:48
Scott Burnside -  Chris; Welcome my friend. Well, atmosphere is relative here at Philips. It's early and traffic is bad and well, I can count all of the folks inside in about 20 seconds. But it's early.

Any updates on the status of the Kovy extension talks? The Thrashers MUST sign him to have any hope of developing a larger hockey fan base in Atlanta. This team has alienated the fans with poor drafts and player development for so long that interest has dwindled to us hardcore fans. Not signing Kovy would be just a brutal blow.

Scott Burnside -

Matt; I think you're right on the mark in terms of the team gaining traction in this market. Bottom line is they need to win or at least make the playoffs and they can't do it without Kovalchuk. I think they will get a deal done. I'm actually going to write a piece on the issue next week so stay tuned.

[Comment From Dave Coppola ]
When Savard and Lucic return to the Buins line-up do you see them returning to the elite teams in the eastern conference?
6:54
Scott Burnside -  Dave; haven't seen the starting line-ups yet but as of this morning it looked like Savard would not play (he did skate though this morning) and Lucic would even though he had the flu yesterday and didn't fly with the team. He was skedded to arrive this afternoon and should be in the line-up. I'll let you know when I see the sheet in a couple of minutes.
