There's speculation on KUSA that it could be several hours before the balloon loses enough helium to bring it to the ground.

Jayney: I haven't seen anything in any of the stories yet to indicate that the balloon has a radio or any communications device. It's probably too much to expect that the boy has a cell phone with him.
