Fumo Live Blog - Tuesday, Feb. 24

10:20
Robert Moran -  Closing arguments will resume shortly. Fumo's lawyer, Dennis Cogan, has brought forth complaints about references and comments made by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Zauzmer during his closing argument yesterday.
10:24
Robert Moran -  Cogan is trying to limit what Zauzmer can say about Mike Palermo and Roseanne Pauciello, longtime Fumo associates who invoked their Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves.
10:25
Robert Moran -  Cogan also complained about Zauzmer saying yesterday that Mitchell Rubin has been attending court everyday but has not testified for Fumo.
10:35
Robert Moran -  Court has resumed.
10:37
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer is addressing Mike Palermo, who had a Senate contract. The government alleges he did no work for his contract.
10:40
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer noted that Palermo got a $10,000 contract with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and does "absolutely nothing" for the contract.
10:41
Robert Moran -  At his peak, Palermo was getting $66,000 a year from Fumo's Senate contract.
10:49
Robert Moran -  "I think you know when you're being taken for a ride," Zauzmer said when recalling that Fumo testified that Palermo was involved in a project to revamp the turnpike rest stops and the Turnpike Commission could not produce any documents to that effect.
10:53
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer is ripping Fumo for using a Senate-paid investigator to conduct surveillance on an ex-girlfriend.
10:56
Robert Moran -  Fumo ordered Frank Wallace to watch his ex-girlfriend, Dorothy Egrie-Wilcox, coming out of a Jersey Shore bar and call the local police when she got in a car to drive.
11:03
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer pointed out that Fumo said he was heartbroken over his break-up with Egrie and that somebody who has been through that would understand his actions. Zauzmer said there are plenty of people who don't understand and would never do what Fumo did.
11:11
Robert Moran -  Talking about Howard Cain, the political consultant who had a Fumo Senate contract, Zauzmer said you don't hire Cain to talk to neighborhood groups. "You hire him to win elections," Zauzmer said.
11:15
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer is showing a Fumo e-mail to Alycia Lane, the former news anchor, but it just talks about politics and has nothing sexy in it.
11:21
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer is talking about how Fumo sent Cain to help defeat Fumo's daughter in a local race in Montgomery County.
11:22
Robert Moran -  Fumo had a falling-out with his daughter before her wedding in 2002 with former Fumo aide Christian Marrone.
11:25
Robert Moran -  "If you want to violate so egregiously like in this case, you hire Howard Cain," Zauzmer said, noting Cain has pleaded guilty tax evasion and fraud.
11:25
Robert Moran -  "...violate the law..."
11:39
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer is rehashing some stuff about employees being overpaid that he covered yesterday. He said he missed a few points, but it's starting to blur for me.
11:48
Robert Moran -  Zauzmer is now moving on to Citizens Alliance for Better Neighborhoods, the nonprofit that Fumo created. Zauzmer accuses Fumo of "skimming" funds from the nonprofit. "Citizens Alliance is not Vince Fumo," Zauzmer said, saying the nonprofit was a victim.
