CBB Weekend Recap and Conference Tourney Preview

7:36
Brian Foley -  I will begin answering questions at 8pm. I am supposed to be on The Dan Spencer show at 7:30pm and awaiting a call from them. Send in your questions now so we can start promptly at 8pm.

Brian Foley -  Welcome to The College Baseball Blog's Weekend Recap and Conference Preview chat for this week. We have another great week as we get closer and closer to Omaha.

Some of the biggest news of the day was Ole Miss losing Scott Bittle for the SEC tournament and likely for the rest of the year as he will see Dr. James Andrews this week. The news is horrible for the Rebels chances to making Omaha.

Dustin Ackley was named ACC POY today, Was this a good or bad choice?
8:03
Brian Foley -  I spoke with someone in the know this week and he stated that Dustin was the second best player on his draft board. Ackley has been the most ridiculous player I have ever seen in College Baseball. If UNC needs a home run, he will hit it. Whatever they need the kid can do.

Ackley projects at the next level as an outfielder according to various people involved in Pro Baseball.
8:04
Brian Foley -  Ackley does have a history with Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm but it shouldn't be a major issue though.

I know UNC is weaker than the last 3 yrs, but do you believe that they can still be in the CWS in 2009?
8:05
Colin Weber -  Yes.   They'll be a national seed, so they'll just have to take care of business at home to earn their spot in Omaha.
8:06
Brian Foley -  If Matt Harvey continues to pitch as well as he did on Saturday then UNC will be all set. The biggest problems I see with UNC is with Adam Warren who looked terrible against Boston College as he left everything up and the bullpen is weak after Moran and Bats.

Alex White is still Alex White and should be the top pitcher drafted after Strasburg.

Do you see any surprises coming up this weekend in the conference tourneys?
8:07
Brian Foley -  I think Indiana is going to give everyone's a run for their money in the Big Ten Tourney. They are a real dangerous team.
8:08
Colin Weber -  I think if you are going to see any big surprises it will be from the Big 12 or the ACC since they both play the pool play format.   Not that I'm calling anything crazy here. but Duke might be able to play themselves into the NCAA tourney if they can make it to the championship game.   I'd watch out for Alabama in the SEC tournament since they are playing a virtual home tournament in Hoover.
8:10
Brian Foley -  I also think Loyola Marymount being in the West Coast Conference Championship could cause trouble if they win the championship as one of the possible at-large teams will be left out.

Hawaii's RPI dropped from 36 to 51 after splitting the weekend series with Utah Valley. Would you kiss the at-large bid goodbye?
8:14
Colin Weber -  It's definitely in jeopardy.   I was able to look over Hawaii's conference record when their RPI was in the 30s, but they are going to need to have a strong showing in the WAC tournament to have any shot at an at-large bid.
