Philly.com -  In the meantime, have you read about the baby orangutan at the zoo? Or about the state of Pennsylvania revoking CC Pets LLC's kennel license?

My dog walks well on a leash except when he sees another dog. He lunges and pulls towards them. Sometimes I can get him to focus on me, but not usually. Any suggestions?

Mary Remer -

Why don't you try taking your dogs breakfast and/or supper mixed with some five star treats in a plastic bag and ask him to sit and look at you and reward him for doing so. Dogs approaching each other head on is not a natural way for dogs if on their own they curve in and out on an approach. I would teach your dog to walk in serpentines and circles so the approach is less direct. You may also want to consider an easy walk harness or a gentle leader. My experience is that dogs that are reactive in this way are usually uncomfortable and need to be taught an alternative behavior where they can be successful. You can also teach your dog a watch or a look command.

I have a Male Bull Terrier who I love so Much, the best dog ever. Any suggestions on adopting a second one. I have had mine froma puppy.

Mary Remer -  As you may or may not know, I have lived with Bull Terriers for 35 years. And, I currently live with 7. You would definitely want to get a female as a companion for your boy. My best recommendation is to find and research a good breeder who breeds social Bull Terriers. And, you should have no trouble adding a second to your family.

My dogs will eat cat poop on our walks (if they spot it before I can yank them away). Why is this and how do I discourage them? I live in Fishtown where there are lots of stray cats. One of my dogs had been a stray before we found him.

Mary Remer -  Kerry - For many dogs dining on cat food and cat poop is like going to dinner at Le Bec Fin. It is extremely hard to dissaude them from this particular restaurant of their choice. I think that the mineral offering in both cat food and cat poop is very appealing. Certainly a dog that was a stray is a good scavenger and it will be hard to retrain him. If I was going to try it, I would actually get some cat poop and teach a leave it command and pay heavily with five star treats for doing so. Start your training in a controlled environment. Then, put the cat poop on the street curb so you know where it is and work on your leave it command and always reward heavily.
