My student is overwhelmed! She called me crying her eyes out a 5:15am, yesterday morning as she was walking to her apt. from the library. She had been ther most of the night. She took a class that was way above her head, at the advice of her advisor. She fears that she is falling behind in her other studies, in order to keep up with this class. Do you think she she drop this class?

Dean Lori Berquam -  Dear Nancy,

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry to hear about your daughter and her difficulties with one of her courses.  The best course of action would be for your daughter to connect with her advisor as soon as possible.  It would be ideal for that conversation to take place before deciding to drop the class.  This would help in identifying the implications of the drop.

Additionally, it might be good for your daughter to consider tutoring if she hasn't taken advantage of that resource.  This is a very common feeling right now because it is mid-term and classes can be overwhelming!

My daughter says she is having trouble finding fun 'non-drinking/partying' activities on the weekends; says that's what everyone does but it's not for her. What resources are available?

My daughter would like to meet Judy's daughter! She feels the same way!

Parent Program - Nancy -  Dear Judy -

There are many activities available for students that do not involve alcohol. If your student lives in the residence halls, there are many activities offered. He or she can check with his/her House Fellow. In addition, the Union provides many late-night alternatives. There are hundreds of student organizations that students can get involved in. There are many events happening on campus listed at Today @ UW. For more ideas, contact us tomorrow.

Do you know anything about the Fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha? My son is a pledge and they want him to sign a lease for next year to live in the house. Is something that he needs to do right away??
6:06
Dean Lori Berquam -

Dear Lisa Breit,

Thanks for your question!  There is a lot of pressure to sign a lease early and this would be considered early for off-campus housing.  I cannot comment on that fraternity specifically, sorry!  But you can certainly contact them yourself and request a walk-thru of the facility.
