Chat with Tom Pelissero

Tom Pelissero -  Hey everybody. What do you have for me?

[Comment From BubbaOne]
Tom, Special teams ranked 26th last year. If we can improve to avg. (16th) I feel it's worth a couple of victories by itself let alone improve the defense . Teamwise: What's your first impression of the special team units and how is coach Slocum making a difference? Individually: I know it is early and also final cuts could change things but being on the first team for some of the units is a good indication who will make the club. Did I see correctly LB's Jones and Havner are on first team units? Using this measuring stick I feel Ruvell Martin will make the final roster. Who else of the marginal players are on first team units?

Here's a general interest question. What do the Packers provide for the players in terms of religious services -- at home and on the road? Thanks!

Tom Pelissero -  Bubba, I asked around quite a bit on this and will be writing on it soon. The two main emphases seem to be on accountability and fundamentals. The former is to try to galvanize players, get some enthusiasm about playing special teams, and I get the feeling players like having a younger coach. The latter comes down to simple things like blocking technique, which was an afterthought under Stock. Jones and Havner were on first units, yes. Can't remember off hand which ones.

Tom Pelissero -  Sorry, that got out of order. Paul, I know there is some sort of mass/service on the road. At home, as far as I know, players are on their own. But I can honestly say I've never looked too much into this.

Can you convince me that the 3-4 is the way to go?
1:08
Tom Pelissero -

No one should be able to convince you, because we haven't seen it yet outside of shorts-and-no-contact practices. It looks to be a more dynamic defense than Bob Sanders' scheme. But that means nothing if you don't execute it well.

should we be intrigues/excited about this brandon underwood kid, looks like he has great size and hopefully ability for the cb position.

Tom Pelissero -  We didn't get much of a look at Underwood this offseason because of the NFL policy that keeps away players whose schools use the quarters system. He was so far behind after missing a month that he was buried on the third team for most team drills. He has good length and a really narrow frame. Seems to run OK. Versatile. It will be a challenge for him to make the 53, though.

Hey Tom.......What do you guys have planned for keeping us Packer junkies from getting too bored in July??
1:11
Tom Pelissero -  Well, Brett Favre should be unretiring any day now, right? In all seriousness, Rob and I still have a few stories we're working on post-minicamp, there are rookie negotiations to report on and Pete Dougherty's position-by-position series starts eight days before camp opens. We'll do what we can.

Tom, Why are the Packers not seriously looking to rent Edgerrin James? Pay him his veteran up front cash and incentives if he can stay healthy all year. I just don't see Wynn and Jacobs getting it done. We really don't know what we are going to get from Grant this year. Thanks,
1:12
Tom Pelissero -  Because Ted Thompson doesn't sign guys in their 30s. Simple as that. Not saying it's right or wrong, but all the clamoring about Vonnie Holliday, Kevin Carter, etc. fell in the same category to me. It's just not something Thompson does.

[Comment From Martin]
who do you think will be the 5th WR? Martin or Swain? Can Swain still eligible for practice sqad?
1:13
Tom Pelissero -  I'd lean toward Martin, but Swain came on strong late in OTAs. He's a different sort of receiver. They've gone six-deep in the past. He has two years of PS eligibility left.

[Comment From Jayme in Wausau]
Out of all of the expected free agents this next year, which ones are the least likely to be Packers in the 2010 season?
1:15
Tom Pelissero -  Jayme, that's sort of a twofold question. Obviously, guys like Kuhn, Humphrey, Martin, etc. aren't even locks to be Packers in 2009. If you're talking about the 7 or 8 core players, I think because of Thompson's philosophy (see: above) you'd have a tough time saying Clifton will be back. Kampman and Pickett are tough calls, too, because they'll both be 30 and we haven't seen them in the 3-4. I'd bet at least two of those three are gone.

[Comment From Dan at Marquette]
Hey Tom, thanks for chatting. Looking forward a bit to next off season, the Packers have expiring contracts from Collins, Kampman, Bigby, Spitz, Pickett and a BUNCH more. This team could look very, very different next year. Just as an early guess, who do you see staying, and who do you see going?
1:16
Tom Pelissero -  Sorry, repeat question. My instinct is that Colledge and Collins are the next guys the Packers try to get done. But a lot is up in the air with the CBA, so I can't say what sort of timeline those players would be on.

do you think Deshawn Wynn has a chance to start one day for the Packers he looks good when he does stay healthy and plays in games
