Crappy Hour With Latoya Peterson, June 25, 2009

8:58
Latoya Peterson -  Yo.
9:01
Megan -  Hey! This is a morning that calls for Diet Coke, but I haven't yet left to house to get any as I've been obsessively reading Mark Sanford's missives to his mistress.
9:02
Latoya Peterson -  I mean, seriously.   He had to go to Argentina to break up with her?
9:02
Latoya Peterson -  A nice restaurant wasn't good enough?
9:04
Megan -  Did he break up with her? All he said was that he'd cried... and he went there after his wife booted his ass out. And all he said yesterday was that he was trying to get his heart right, but that he'd had something "real."
9:05
Megan -  My question is: who leaked the emails? One of her kids (and why would they have sent it to the local South Carolina paper)?

Or... his wife?
9:05
Latoya Peterson -   Gail Collins said it was a break up.   Maybe it wasn't.
9:05
Latoya Peterson -  Well Megs, they say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.   What would you do if you wanted to hurt you philandering political hubby?
9:06
Latoya Peterson -  Maybe she's pissed she didn't go to Argentina.
9:07
Megan -  I would probably leak his emails to the press, set the media on his lying trail over Father's Day and then release a long statement quoting the Bible, citing our kids and offering my forgiveness if he continues to debase himself.

I would then probably divorce his ass.
9:07
Megan -  And then get caught canoodling with someone half his age or a political rival.
9:08
Latoya Peterson -  The news is coming in from the other room (boyfriend's a news junkie) and I thought I just heard them say the wife is thinking it over.
9:08
Latoya Peterson -  Now, I understand the stay by your husband thing - but a lot of political wives stand by in the face of epic marriage fails.   I wonder what kind of deals they are cutting.
9:08
Latoya Peterson -  As a matter of fact, I'm not even interested in the mistress emails - what did the wife say?
9:10
Megan -  Well, she starts twisting the knife in paragraph one:
I would like to start by saying I love my husband and I believe I have put forth every effort possible to be the best wife I can be during our almost twenty years of marriage. As well, for the last fifteen years my husband has been fully engaged in public service to the citizens and taxpayers of this state and I have faithfully supported him in those efforts to the best of my ability. I have been and remain proud of his accomplishments and his service to this state.
9:11
Latoya Peterson -  Subtext: You son-of-a-bitch!   I could have left you years ago and you know it!
9:11
Megan -  It's a lot of "I" statements, especially if you compare it to, say, Elizabeth Edwards' statement about her husband's affair.
Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some – most recently – caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences.  None of these has been easy.  But we have stood with one another through them all.  Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.
9:12
Latoya Peterson -  She has an exit plan.   That much is clear.   Ah well - speaking of letters and such...I heard Obama wrote a letter and it wasn't to Michelle.
9:12
Megan -  Oh, Mrs. Sanford ain't done with her knife yet, either!
Instead, the greatest legacy I will leave in this world is the character of the children I, or we, leave behind. It is for that reason that I deeply regret the recent actions of my husband Mark, and their potential damage to our children.

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband's infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

9:13
Latoya Peterson -  Damn! Subtext: This is not my fault motherfucker and you made me look bad!
